Houston – No. 24 Texas Tech found itself on the wrong end of a 16-inning, 5-hour, 34-minute marathon Sunday night and into Monday morning, falling 4-2 in the third and final day to No. 15 Texas A&M in the Shriners Minor’s College Classic at Minute Maid Park. It was the most innings pitched in his 23-year history.
It was the longest game, in innings, the Red Raiders have played since March 3, 2015 at home against Abilene Christian.
Behind Dillon Carter’s two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, the Red Raiders took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning. Texas A&M rallied to tie the game, thanks to four walks — the fourth of which brought home the game-tying run. Damian Bravo started the frame as Garrett Crowley looked to punch out to escape the game.
Kyle Robinson threw the next six innings in a false start. He kept the Aggies off the scoreboard while allowing three hits between the 10th and 15th innings. He led Tech in the pitch count category, striking out 79 over the first four frames with 73 pitches against Sunday starter Taber Fasting.
The Aggies benefited from a combination of errors in the 16th by Jacob Rogers on the mound. Texas A&M led off the 16th with a single. The Red Raiders got away with it most of the night, but couldn’t put it away in the final moments. The Aggies’ leadoff hitter hit 10 of 16 innings Sunday night.
The two teams combined to put 33 baserunners on base. The Red Raiders left 17 on base while the Aggies left 16. Texas Tech beat Texas A & M, 10-7, but the Red Raiders gave up 16 walks allowing seven of the Aggies staff.
Texas Tech’s Nolen Hester led the team in hits with three hits (3-for-7), while Gavin Cash had the most hits with two (2-for-6).
