NHL Style Power Rankings: The data is in, and our first fashion king…

I didn’t have a specific goal when I started The athleticsNHL style power rankings at the start of the 2021-22 season. I want to support some players who dare to break the mold and show their personality in the league, which often encourages them to deviate from the norm. I wanted to highlight some awesome projects in the hockey world like Black Rose coming to life. I wanted to shame social media managers for using the word “drop” incorrectly.

Somewhere along the way, “Who cares?” He got in the middle of the inevitable. Comments, we’ve grown a fun community here, and thanks for the interactions I’ve been looking forward to this season.

Along the way, I began to realize just how deep fashion is for some NHL players. For example, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare told us about drawing inspiration from his sisters and the late Ray Emery.

The result of all of this – the full season rankings – has yielded many data points about the best-dressed players in the league. There’s human error to consider, and there’s an inherent bias considering teams like the Maple Leafs rarely show us the arrivals of their players and there are no team performances. Each Playful (and we can’t wait for them). But it’s still fun to see a 60-drop drop stretched out after a big time.

We brought a big gun for this – The athleticsShayna Goldman’s extraordinary analysis and data visualization helps us get an accurate picture of the 2021-22 NHL roster.

Shayna explained: “Sarah put together and ranked each player and we created a points system based on where they landed each week. 10 points are awarded to player number 1 and 10 points to each edition’s style power rating. As the table reflects, style points are added together for a final score. Some players boosted their final length by a few mid-range levels, while others had a bye week (we’re looking at you, David Pastraki) to increase their numbers.

“This is a stacked style graph, with bars indicating how many times a player has appeared in the rankings. So if a player has three bars, they are shown three times in the level. For example, if you’re Pierre-Luc Dubois, you’ve done the long bar number 1 step twice. Not all players who topped the style power rankings ended up in the graphic, as 73 players appeared at least once.

Now let’s review our Season 1 Top 10.

10. Anthony Duclair

Duclair put the Panthers on his radar at the time with a few defining appearances. He played a total of four games and reached number 3. I have a feeling when he’s halfway through his recovery from Achilles surgery, he’ll bring some No. 1-worthy stuff.

9. Yani Gorde

Gorde continued the nautical theme throughout the opening season of Kraken, and I love it for him and them alone. He was one of the Kraken’s most high-profile players in their first year on the team, and he clearly understood that part of the class was to dress the part. Looking back on that first season in Seattle 10 years later, we appreciate every aspect of it.

He was only ranked twice in the power rankings, but they were at No. 1 and No. 2.

8. K’Andre Miller

Miller is in his first full NHL season without being restricted by Covid-19. Season was the style star of the year. I was expecting it to end a little higher at the end of this season, but the Rangers started pushing out images of everyone in tracksuits towards the end of the year. I’m sure it’s just the beginning, and I’m looking forward to many more years of fashion excellence – especially in New York City.

It appeared four times in the rankings, reaching number 4

7. Matthew Joseph

Joseph has been a staple in the middle of the pack all season, and some would argue he’s better than No. 1 and then down. I consider Joseph’s vision of an NHL owner to be excellent, modern but not over-the-top. He keeps the outfit familiar but fun with a few personal twists, and that’s reminiscent of his suburban Montreal roots.

Joseph has appeared in the rankings four times, peaking at number 3.

6. Elvis Merzlikins

Elvis’ style and personality are synonymous with his iconic name, and even when the Blue Jackets weren’t exactly buzzing, his outfit was highly anticipated throughout the season. Merzlikins, a fan of bans, hats and Joker suits, has peaked in the 2021-22 power rankings and has made five appearances in total. I like to see what the team has in store when they have a good season.

5. Adam Lowry

When I first set out to do these levels, I didn’t think Lori would play that many games. But despite the coldness of Winnipeg, a week later he brought the heat. He has a personal style reminiscent of a good college professor, and remains very committed to the general beat. Sticking to his looks and consistently keeping it fresh, he’s stepped up to the plate, and I can’t wait to see what he has on board for next season.

Lowry was all over the place in the rankings, from No. 1 to No. 10 with five total views.

4. Patrick Laine

Laine started the 2021-22 season with a strong performance and showed us the power of all color combinations and accessories. His style is perhaps the most controversial in the league as it is bold and centered around statement pieces such as glasses, 007 suits and beanies.

Love him or hate him, his willingness to push the envelope is undoubtedly what up-and-coming NHLers really want to wear.

Laine’s debut at No. 1 and three other appearances in the rankings were good enough for 4th place overall, although he didn’t nail it every time and there were some misses. Just goes to show the power of a few bangers and that sometimes it’s worth taking a chance, even if you don’t get off.

3. Ryan Reaves

If Laine was the king of danger and flash, Reeves was the king of consistency when it came to his clothes. He’s not very flashy, and he doesn’t need to be; It allows a strong color choice to make a statement. His specialty seems to be working with bright colors, and this season you’ve seen him in tons of purple and green solids. We have to give props to his tailor for clearly knowing how to fit wool.

The Revs have three top-five and four total games in the 2021-22 power rankings.

2. In PK sub


PK Subban (via @njdevils)

Subban has been a rare burst of personality in the NHL since his arrival, and part of that has always been his strong sense of style. It’s one of the biggest threats in the world of hockey fashion as it comes as a shock to absolutely no one. (Here are two more looks posted by Subban himself.) He never topped the charts last season, but I think the Devils jersey brand explains that social feeds are focused on the gear, not the fit. I can only work with what the teams and players have shown me, guys.

Subban finished with three top-five games, five total games and one shutout against the Missin’ Curfew fellas. It’s not bad at all.

1. To David Pastor

Pastrnak ran away with the 2021-22 Power Rankings crown. Not only did he top the rankings in three games, but he also got the highest ranking in 9 games overall. He’s never afraid to take risks, but even the most understated looks have a certain Pastrnak flair to them. His range is simply unmatched among his peers, and he pulls off all the confident smiles.

He’s also used his fashion eye for good in the hockey world, featuring Bruins legend Willie Orie in a custom fedora, and that’s just what we love to see.

Keeping up with all of these killer features next season will be a tall task for Pastrnak — many hockey players are getting creative with their outfits every year — but if anyone can handle a two-peat, it’s him.
