The Purdue University Police Department’s (PUPD) new police chief is sharing travel tips as another school year begins on the West Lafayette campus. Chief Leslie Witte started her new job earlier this month and is reminding students, faculty, staff and visitors to stay safe on the streets, sidewalks and bike paths.
“As a 22-year PUPD veteran, I know how busy campus can be during peak times,” Wiete says. “It is imperative that motorists, pedestrians or motorists traveling on and around campus pay attention to their surroundings and obey all posted signs and signals.”
Witte is asking the campus community to practice the following safety tips.
Pedestrians
- Walk on the sidewalks. If possible, do not walk on the road.
- If sidewalks are not available, use multi-use paths.
- Always be alert. Don’t be distracted by electronic devices.
- Always use crosswalks, marked center block crossings, and intersections where drivers wait for pedestrians.
- Look for vehicles in all directions, including those turning left or right.
- Obey pedestrian signs in areas where these safety devices are deployed.
Bicycles, skateboards and electric or motorized vehicles (EMPVs)
- Wear a helmet and bright clothing or reflective gear.
- Use roadways in accordance with Indiana State Law, West Lafayette City Ordinances and Purdue University Parking and Traffic Regulations. Use bike lanes or multiple paths whenever possible.
- Obey bicycle signs in areas where these safety devices are deployed.
- Always be alert. Do not use cell phones or other portable devices to talk or text while cycling or driving.
- Regularly check to make sure your vehicle is equipped with working headlights, taillights and reflectors.
Motor vehicles
- Look for pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders and EMPV operators.
- Be ready to win. Know state laws about interacting with pedestrians, bicyclists, skateboarders, and EMPV operators at intersections and median crossings.
- Never pass vehicles parked on a sidewalk or center crosswalk.
- Stay alert and slow down where large groups or children are present, including near residence halls, dining halls, apartment buildings, neighborhoods, parks and recreation areas.
In addition, students, faculty and staff who need an escort to campus buildings for safety reasons can take advantage of the Safe Walk program 24 hours a day by calling 765-494-SAFE (7233).
