Queen Maxima of the Netherlands visited the Kerr Community Center in Bastrop on Sept. 8 to hear from local youth about their perspectives and needs regarding mental health. During the queen’s time in Bastrop, she was able to not only build rapport with Bastrop County youth delegates, but also tap into the core of society’s need for youths’ perspectives.
Bastrop County Cares has set up its Resilient Bastrop County Initiative — a community collaborative that will assess, plan and implement strategies to become a healthier community that supports resilience, mental health and well-being — with partners such as Youth Building Networks for Change and the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health to develop safe spaces designed for youth to hear and heal with one another.
In support of local mental health initiatives, the Bastrop County Commissioners Court signed a proclamation making Sept. 8 Youth Mental Health Day in Bastrop County.
“I am honored to have been a co-host for this once in a lifetime occasion, setting the stage for change to come in Bastrop County for our youth,” said Krystal Grimes, inclusion and resilience director for Bastrop County Cares.
