LAS VEGAS – Nate Diaz put on a vintage performance in Saturday’s UFC 279 main event at T-Mobile Arena, submitting Tony Ferguson with a guillotine choke at 2:52 of the fourth round in the new main event.

Diaz left the door open to a return to the UFC, but said he plans to show fighters how to dominate another sport.

“I want to step out of the UFC for a minute and show all these UFC fighters how to handle and how you handle another sport,” Diaz said inside the house. “Conor McGregor didn’t know how to do it. None of these fighters know how to do it. So I’m going to go out there, take on another, other profession and be the best at it – show everybody that I’m the best at it.

After that, he said he would consider returning to the UFC and chasing a title.

After Kamzat Chimeev missed weight on Friday and the UFC was forced to change the final three fights on the main card.

Chimev was a -1200 favorite with Diaz, but when the fight turned, Diaz was only a +125 underdog to Ferguson. While Ferguson is the -150 favorite, six times as many tickets have been written on Diaz.

Diaz put on one of his classic performances. He did a lot of boxing, circling the house, but as the fight wore on he found more success. At the start of the second round he was opening Ferguson up and by the time they got to the fourth he was hurting him.

Ferguson was bleeding from his right eye and had a large gash on his left arm.

Diaz’s legs showed the impact of Ferguson’s kicks, but Diaz had too much with his hands. Diaz was happy to face Ferguson instead of Chimev.

“Fighting another OG would have been nice and not [Chimaev’s] A female dog,” Diaz said.

The crowd cheered Diaz during the fight, but they erupted in cheers when Ferguson tapped out.
