MTN will increase the monthly contract price

MTN has announced that it will adjust its consumer price plan subscription fees by an average of 5.1% as ‘challenging market conditions continue to weigh on the industry’. The new rates will be effective from April 1, 2023.

The effect of the inflationary environment has been increased input costs, due to congestion and increased fuel consumption, which has been exacerbated by ongoing battery theft and vandalism. All this forced MTN to review the value of the contract.

“Our commitment is to keep these increases low and below inflation in an effort to deliver the best possible service to our customers. While these price increases are inevitable, we will continue to invest in our network and battery deployment to ensure our customers have the best connectivity in the country. We are committed to working with local authorities, communities and our partners to find new solutions to address theft and vandalism, which are increasing our maintenance and security costs, said Ernst Fonternel, MTN SA Chief Consumer Officer.

In some cases the actual subscription fee increase may be higher than the average 5.1%, with a maximum of 7.4%.This mainly represents an increase of R10 from R135 to R145 on Mega XS price plans. Voice call rates increased by an average of 4.0% per minute, or a maximum of 10c per minute, while out-of-bundle data and SMS rates were reduced to R0.25 per MB and R0.35 per message respectively. Charges on mobile phones and other devices as part of contract agreements will not be affected by the increase.

“We want to assure our customers that we are working hard to build network resilience through batteries and generators and provide maximum protection against theft and vandalism. MTN will continue to provide our customers with great networks and products that add value, and we thank them for their loyalty,” Fonternell said.

He added that MTN has focused on making the media accessible to South Africans. “MTN’s purchase of additional high-demand spectrum in 2022 has enabled improved speeds in larger and more cost-effective bundles. This is in line with MTN’s ongoing commitment to further reduce the cost of connectivity in South Africa, resulting in an average efficiency reduction of over 38% per MB over the past three years.

Customers subscribed to existing price plans have been informed about price plan adjustments by MTN customer service representatives. The price plan increase date may vary depending on the customer’s billing cycle. However, all terms and conditions remain the same.
