Houghton, Mich — Michigan Tech Nordic Ski Team Coaches Tom and Kristen Monahan Smith have announced the 2022-23 Nordic Ski Team schedule.
The entire Nordic racing world has decided to introduce equal distance races for the 2022-23 season to promote equality in the sport. From the NCAA to the World Cup, all competitions the Michigan Tech Nordic Ski Team will compete in this season will be equal distances for women and men.
A highlight of the program will be the Nordic Husky Games, host of the 2023 Toyota US Cross Country Ski National Championships (US CCC), at the Hampton Inn & Suites of Houghton on Tech Trials from January 2-7, 2023.
The season begins Dec. 10-11 against Michigan Tech at the CXC Cup at the Grand Avenue Nordic Center in Duluth, Minn. The Skate Sprint races will be held on December 10th with the Classic Individual Distance race on December 11th.
The Huskies will host the MTU Pre-Nationals CCSA Invitational/CXC Cup at Houghtons’ own Tech Trails Dec. 17-18. The Dec. 17 skier will feature the individual distance races, which count as NCAA qualifying races for the CCSA. December 18th features classic sprint races. All MTU Pre-Nationals CCSA Invitational and CXC Cup will be held at 2023 US CCC courses.
Following the winter break, Michigan Tech returns to the Tech Trails to play host
2023 Toyota US Cross Country Ski National Championships at the Hampton Inn & Suites of Houghton, Jan. 2-7. For information on the 2023 Toyota US Cross Country Ski National Championships, please visit usnationals.mtu.edu.
Annabelle Needham took the U23 win and finished 11th overall in last season’s competition.
After the national championships, the Nordic Huskies will compete in the Seeley Hills SuperTour CCSA Invitational in Seeley and Cable, Wis. on Jan. 14-15. The Nordic Huskies will compete in the Classic Mass Start on Jan. 14, which counts as NCAA qualifying for the CCSA. The Nordic Huskies will compete in the Super Tour Classic Sprint on January 15.
The Huskies will return to Duluth, Minn., on Feb. 4-5 for the College of St. Scholastica CCSA at the Grand Avenue Nordic Center.
Michigan Tech will travel to Minneapolis, Minn. on February 18-19 to compete in the CCSA Conference Championships. The Classic Mass Start will be held on February 18th, and will be considered NCAA eligible. The Skate Sprint will be held on Feb. 19, as part of a Super Tour event and CCSA Conference Championships.
Last season, the women’s team won the Butch Reimer Trophy as the women’s team championship and the Nordic Huskies were the combined team champions of the 2021-22 CCAA Conference Championships.
The Nordic Huskies advance to the postseason for the NCAA Central Regional Ski Championships on Feb. 25-26 at Al Qual Recreation Area in Ishpeming, Mich. The ski individual distance will be held on February 25, followed by the classic mass start distance on February 26.
15k NCAA Central Region Champion Henriette Semb is back for a senior campaign with the Nordic Huskies. Michigan Tech also won the combined overall team regional championship last season.
The season will conclude with the NCAA Championships, held in Lake Placid, NY on Thursday, March 8 with the Ski Individual Distance Race, and Saturday, March 11 with the Classic Mass Start Race.
The Nordic Huskies return six student-athletes from teams that tied for a program-best sixth place at the 2022 NCAA Skiing Championships. Among those returning for Michigan Tech are All-Americans Annabelle Needham and Skylar Patton.
