MILWAUKEE – As a little girl, Lynn learned how to sew by sitting at her grandmother’s knee. Lynne Dixion Speller founded the Edessa School of Fashion in honor of her paternal great-grandfather, Edessa Mick Dixon, after her dedication to fashion.
“It is the first new four-year college in the state of Wisconsin to be approved for programs through the Educational Approval Program, Department of Safety and Professional Services. It is the first chartered fashion college in the Midwest, and the first four-year college in the state to be minority-led,” Lynn said.
“It only took 100 years. Edessa went to Tuskegee University and graduated in 1920, and the school was chartered in 2020,” Lynn said. She then taught me how to sew and gave me a job.

It was very professional. Lenny’s compliments are amazing! He has over thirty years in higher education, over five years in college administration, and a Master of Science degree (MS) from Western Kentucky University with a concentration in apparel and textiles. Add to this an internationally respected and awarded costume designer with numerous museum credits, including the Smithsonian’s Museum of African American History and Culture.
On September 8th, Lynn and three of her most promising students will attend New York Fashion Week BLK. Another amazing achievement. It may have only taken 100 years, but Edessa, led by Lynn Dixion Speller, is making up for lost time.
