Last year’s flamboyant beauty theme brought outfits that dripped with opulence.. This year is about Karl Lagerfeld, the famous designer behind Chanel from 1983 until his death in 2019.

“In many ways, Lagerfeld is the quintessential designer of the 20th and early 21st centuries. He brought a unique universality and expertise to fashion that bridged the gap between art and commerce. And he did so with sophistication, wit and passion,” said Max Hollin, director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They said.

The gala marks the opening of the museum’s exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: The Line of Beauty”.

One hundred and fifty of the late designer’s clothes are displayed along with the original designs.

“We didn’t want to highlight Carl the man, who has long been a breathless legend of his own bold creativity. Instead, we wanted to focus on Carl the designer and identify what was critical. What set him apart from his peers was the aspect of his design process, namely his practice of drawing,” said curator Andrew Bolton. .

Vogue editor Anna Wintour has hosted the Met Gala for the past 24 years. This year, Lagerfeld is private because she was one of his closest secrets.

You can expect fashion Monday night that reflects the work of Chanel, Fendi, Chloé, Balmain and his namesake label, Karl Lagerfeld.

The famous designer had his own signature look – white tail, white high collar shirt and black gloves.

“The fashion designer impresario created the identity of contemporary fashion design, something that many designers aspire to, but few succeed in, and if few, excel at,” Bolton said.

Of course, it’s not just a fashion show. It is the largest fundraiser for the Met Costume Institute. The guest list was hand-picked by Anna Wintour. Tickets are around $50,000 per hear.

Last year’s gala raised more than $17 million.
