It’s the first Monday in May, which means the Met Gala is back, with A-listers descending on the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for fashion’s most lucrative night.
While last year’s theme focused on the elegance of the Gilded Age, this year’s focus is on a different legacy of luxury: “In Honor of Karl,” the powerhouse is a tribute to the life and work of Karl Lagerfeld – and often controversial – designer. He has transformed some of fashion’s most famous houses. Lagerfeld became synonymous with Chanel during his decade as creative director, and in When he died in 2019 at the age of 85, he was still helming Chanel and Fendi, where he had guided design for more than half a century, as well as his namesake label.

The Met Gala’s theme is based on the Costume Institute’s spring show, “Karl Lagerfeld’s Beauty Line,” a posthumous retrospective of the German fashion designer’s work.

Dua Lipa, Mikaela Coyle, Roger Federer and Penelope Cruz co-chaired this year’s event with Vogue International Editorial Director Anna Wintour, the latter walking the runway for Chanel for the first time since Lagerfeld’s death.

Penélope Cruz, who wore the historic Chanel bridal gown, told Vogue that they became close after Lagerfeld met her in 1999 and named her a brand ambassador. “I loved it,” she said.

Due to Lagerfeld’s deep influence on generations of designers and models, the red carpet (or this year the white carpet) has paid tribute to the stars by passing on his best designs for decades, and his reinterpretation of his unique black-glove has become a personal style.

Echoing Lagerfeld’s classic Chanel palette, black, white, blush and pearls reign. Several archive looks from the label were re-enacted by Met Gala guests, including Margot Robbie wearing a dress worn by Cindy Crawford in 1993 and Nicole Kidman wearing the iconic feathered gown of Chanel No 5 directed by her lover Baz Luhrmann. Business since 2004.

Kidman told Vogue on the carpet that it was amazing “to be able to honor him now and wear this dress.” She added: “There’s a sense of humor to it and it’s light as a feather. It’s couture and it should be.”

Federer had a touching, subtle tribute to Lagerfeld: Fendi creative director Kim Jones (who took over from Lagerfeld after his death) incorporated hand-drawn designs inspired by the German designer into the retired tennis star’s wardrobe.

“These are the most elaborate events I’ve ever done to dress up for an event. It was a lot of fun,” Federer told CNN.

Although Lagerfeld’s favorite cream-colored cat, Choupette, could not make the gala after months of rumors, there were plenty of feline references in her honor. Doja Cat, Jared Leto and Lil Nas X come in full cat attire, Doja Cat’s glittering Oscar de la Renta hooded gown complete with prosthetics puts the much-maligned “Cats” movie to shame.

And although in past years Kim Kardashian has tried to break the internet with her gala appearances, she says she’s not worried about spoiling herself this year. She told Vogue that she wanted to “feel beautiful” in her Chanel-inspired Schiaparelli look. “I just wanted to dip in the pearls.”
