May is Mental Health Awareness Month in Macon-Bibb County and across the nation. To celebrate, Mayor Lester Miller presented Macon Mental Health Matters (MMHM) and other partners with a proclamation on Tuesday, May 2. You can read the full proclamation here.

This month, MMHM is launching a new three-part Lunch & Learn series to get more people talking and reaching out for help. The event is designed to provide you with valuable insights and information on what it means to be mentally healthy, how therapy can be beneficial, and dispel stigmas about therapy. Each session will be free and open to the public, and food will be provided.

The first session will be  Friday, May 12, from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Just Tap’d (488 1st Street). This session’s theme focuses on Women and Mental Wellness, and is dedicated to empowering women to prioritize their mental health and well-being

“The Lunch & Learn series will discuss practical ways in which mental health can benefit the lives of men, women, and their relationships,” says MMHM Coordinator Andrea Cooke. “The conversations will include both mental health professionals and those who have experienced counseling. These will be honest transparent conversations to reduce the impacts of mental health on everyday living. We also hope to build connection for our community.”

The next sessions will be a Men & Mental Wellness session on Friday, May 19 and a Relationships & Mental Wellness session on Friday, May 26. Both are also at Just Tap’d from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m.

People will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in meaningful discussions with experts and other attendees. The event also provides a safe and supportive environment people to connect and share their experiences. Whether you are new to therapy or looking to gain a better understanding of mental wellness, this event is for everyone.

MMHM will also have a series of other events including its monthly Pop-Up Gym at the Frank Johnson Recreation Center on Saturday, May 13, Community-Wide Mindfulness Day at Rosa Parks Square on Sunday, May 21, and many other events. Follow MMHM on Facebook and check the website for more events and updates.
