A five-day May Day holiday kicked off in China on Saturday, with domestic travel demand fully recovering after Beijing lifted its strict “zero-COVID” policy in January.
About 120 million domestic trips are expected to be made by rail passengers in the eight days through next Thursday, up 20 percent from 2019 levels, Xinhua news agency reported, citing China State Railway Group Co.
China Central Television reported that nearly 9 million air trips are expected to be made during the holiday season, with domestic passenger capacity exceeding that of the same period in 2019. May Day, also known as Labor Day, is on Monday.
Starting Saturday, travelers entering China will be able to undergo antigen tests within 48 hours of boarding instead of PCR tests, and airlines will not confirm test results before departure.
