Canadian drone tech and services company Dragonfly is launching a new business relationship with Lufthansa Group’s Information Technology Partnership for its German unit Vital Intelligence to use its capabilities in the air for a variety of maritime operations – particularly the search and rescue of people who have fallen at sea.
Dragonfly said it has signed a letter of intent with IT services provider Lufthansa Industry Solutions, which operates the company’s drones and software for maritime customers. These include inspecting and tracking ships and cargo, mapping maritime operations, but primarily deploying UAVs during search and rescue for people who fall overboard.

In addition to strengthening its offering to industrial, transport and public service customers, the Lufthansa partner said the promise of greater safety and responsiveness offered by Dragonfly drones and related technologies is attracting interest from companies in the maritime tourism and travel sectors.
“Dragonfly’s support has enabled us to expand our portfolio for the cruise industry,” said Klaus Vollmer, Managing Director of Lufthansa Industrial Solutions Hamburg. “We are looking forward to a long and successful partnership.”
Dragonfly drones will add many valuable new capabilities to artificial intelligence as Lufthansa Industrial Solutions services customers.
Its UAVs are primarily used for search-and-rescue and reconnaissance missions, relying on onboard optical and infrared imaging sensors to scan and map oversea casualties. Find survivors; And when recovery teams are called in, they start measuring their core needs. The latter is enabled by Dragonfly’s Vital Intelligence software and uses video feeds from simple RGB cameras to measure biometric data and access health indicators.

The partnership with Lufthansa Industrial Solutions is another development in Dragonfly’s use of drone technology to aid the work of first responders, law enforcement agencies and humanitarian groups – including medical transport and mine clearance in Ukraine. The company’s chief executive, Cameron Chell, praised the expansion of that work overseas.
“We are excited to partner with Lufthansa Industry Solutions and bring our versatile AI technology to their existing infrastructure,” Chell said. “This partnership reflects the growing demand for drone, AI and data solutions with our Tier 1 customers.”
