I am saddened by what many journalists feel are the most important parts of Kenneth Yanchette’s obituary to reprint news stories about his death.
Going to his full obituary on Legacy.com, he notes that many writers have left him: “He lived in Pittsfield for 80 years and served on the City Council, Planning Board, Industrial Park Board, SAD 53 Board of Education…”
We live in a time when many of our most innovative and knowledgeable citizens believe that citizen participation is of little concern. It only takes a simple donation to a political candidate or cause to alleviate any sense of civic responsibility. Even in retirement, many feel that frequent leisure trips, events, or other trivial, time-consuming pleasures are a way to disappear from this world.
We will certainly miss Ken’s hard work, creativity and business, but most of all the importance he placed on civic engagement.
