NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — For McCann Tech coach Justin Howland, it was, you know, the devil’s business … a tough setback.
Drury Blue Devil Nick Lescarbeau scattered five hits in a game-ending performance as his team beat the Howland Hornets 3-1 at Joe Wolfe Field on Thursday.
“Nick was it tonight,” Howland said of his crosstown rival. “I’ve known Nick for a long time. He is actually my son’s best friend. It’s my home six days a week.
“If I’m going to lose to anybody, I want to lose to Nick. He’s a great kid.”
Most people lost to Lescarbeau this spring. Thursday’s win moved his record to 4-1 with a 2.62 ERA.
He walked just one batter with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and walked three runners, including two in the seventh to put the game away.
“We believe [Lescarbeau]We trust everyone on defense,” captain Nick Sacco said. “Defensively, we’re a sound team. So no matter who knocks, who doesn’t swing, who comes out on the field, we believe in ourselves.
“Nick and Connor [Hinkell] You have been doing well. We have great patches, great reliefs. So we are prepared. We are doing well,” he said.
Hinkell has a 4-0 record while allowing .53 earned runs in seven innings. He and Lescarbeau carried most of the pitching load for Drury, which improved to 12-3 with Thursday’s win.
On Thursday, Lescarbeau allowed just 5 hits in a combined win over McCann Tech’s Nick Gilman and Lucas Rylander.
Drury Sacco was one of two players in the game who had multiple hits and his debut scored a run in the top of the first.
Hinkel got a one-out walk and led off on Lescarbeau’s groundout to bring Saccone to second with two outs. Blue delivered a double to right center to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.
The Hornets got that run in the bottom of the third.
Troy Tassone singled up the middle, moving into scoring position when Brady Vallieres sacrificed and scored on Gilman (2-for-3, double).
The Hornets put one more runner on when Colin Booth got the team’s third out of the game, but Lescarbeau got out swinging at third to keep the game tied at 1-1.
His mistake rewarded him with a fourth run to retake the lead.
Logan Crockwell reached with one out and scored on Hunter Marceau’s single to center to make it 2-1. The Blue Devils may have come away with several runs in the game, but they were caught stealing by McCann Tech’s Austin Buda and attempting to go from first to third on an infield bobble when Vallier advanced to third base in left field. .
“We absolutely gave it some,” Drury coach Robert Jutras said of the fourth. “But we just talked. [in the postgame]: You control what you can control.
“And we talked about it at the beginning of the game: It’s not about being perfect. It’s about competing and fighting and scratching and scratching. And that’s what we did. That was our goal.
Drury scratched home another run in the sixth to give Lescarbeau some breathing room.
Crockwell led off with a walk, moved back on two balls, and JJ Prenguber scored when he entered the double play with nobody out.
Lescarbeau surrendered the lead to Gilman in the bottom of the sixth, but retired the next three in order to put him in second place.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Hornets got a one-out single from Buda, and Tassone drew a two-out walk to get a visit from the Jutras mound. Lescarbeau settled down and got the last out to give up the tying run in the first.
Although the McCain Tech players left the field with a sense of disappointment at the end of their third game, the game was a far cry from their contest earlier in the week. The Hornets committed a pair of errors in a loss to Lenox and eight in a nine-inning loss to Mount Everett.
When a runner was hit in the top of the seventh on Thursday, they mishandled a single in the infield to allow a runner to advance from first to third.
“We’re sitting at 8-6,” Howland said. “Honestly, I believe today is the first time a team has beaten us without beating ourselves.” well played. They got two more runs than we did. But that was a helluva ballgame.
“They were disappointed, but I told them, this game was not something to hang ourselves. We made mistakes all week, we made mistakes. We didn’t make too many mistakes today. We just played. We had two hits to win that baseball game.
McCann Tech hosts Lee on Monday. Drury leaves for Lenox on Monday.
