Latest Coronavirus: New York hotels bounce faster than expected

Nevada will soon become the last state to offer an incentive program aimed at encouraging more people to receive a shot against Covid-19 amid a slowdown in vaccination rates in the United States.

State Governor Steve Sisolak did not detail what incentives the state will offer, but said Tuesday he expects to announce more information about the program next week.

States have offered cash, lottery tickets, scholarships and even weapons in hopes of receiving more shots in the arms of their residents.

The vaccination rate has dropped to levels last seen in late January, increasing the chances that the release will miss Joe Biden’s goal of having at least 70% of adults inoculated with one or more more doses on July 4th.

The United States has administered approximately 1 million doses per day over the past seven days, up from a peak of 3.4 million in mid-April, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

More than 164 million Americans over the age of 18, or 63.8% of the adult population, have received at least one shot since Tuesday. Approximately 53% of adults are fully vaccinated.

Nevada ranks 32th out of 50 states with 58.3% of its adult population vaccinated with at least one dose.

West Virginia, which ranks 45th with 49.8% of vaccinated adult residents, has tried to increase inoculation levels through a cash lottery and other prizes, such as custom rifles, vans and hunting and fishing licenses. Gov. Jim Justice said 70,000 West Virginians have signed up for the gifts.

Anthony Fauci, chief medical adviser to the White House, said Tuesday that the U.S. must continue to vaccinate more people to prevent the Delta variant from becoming the dominant form of coronavirus in the country.

The Delta variant, which was first discovered in India and made up the majority of new infections in the UK, accounts for about 6% of cases in the United States, according to Fauci.
