The girls they meet find out that Laquan Smith is running the fashion game one collection at a time. Known for creating the looks of many of the biggest stars in entertainment – Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and more – this fashionista has been upping the ante since 2013.
His most recent Met Gala after party saw celebs like Teyana Taylor and Saucy Santana, where guests were treated to Popeyes chicken sandwiches and free merchandise all night long. One thing’s for sure, whether we’re talking events or glamor, Smith knows how to set the vibe.
Continuing to make his presence known, the iconic designer has become one of the latest faces to promote the drinks brand’s new flavor, “Passion,” in collaboration with Cîroc. As we celebrate the launch of Cîroc Passion Vodka during a special party, Laquan Smith caught up with REVOLT to discuss exciting pairings, fashion, music and more for Black Business Month. Read it!
What made you want to collaborate with Cîroc?
Cîroc was definitely a big fan of the brand and me as a designer. For the recent Met Gala after party, the brand was one of the main alcohol sponsors, so it started an organic connection between us. Cîroc is family at this point. Most of all, I am very motivated DD Because he has always influenced me and the aesthetic of design. His videos, fashion – I have great admiration for him and the business he has built. It felt very organic to be a part of this initiative and creative scene about the fusion of art, culture, fashion and music, because that’s what I think about the most. I am honored to be a part of this.
Speaking of fashion, what is one of your favorite Diddy music videos? Give us an all-time classic.
Oh, wow, that’s hard because he has so many classics. But I’d say the one with Lil Kim, Diddy and Macy. Also, “All about Benjamin. Lil Kim has been rocking Chanel suspenders, it’s rocking. He has other great hits with other artists like Total – I love what he’s created.
You’re known for having the best after-party – guests enjoyed giveaways and Popeyes chicken sandwiches at your most recent event. How does it feel to not only reach the status of a fashion icon, but to know that your parties will not be missed?
Well, I don’t see myself that way (laughs). To your credit, I’m a role model. If anything, I think I’m living up to my full potential by being unapologetically me. I am doing things that I love and that involve feelings, emotions and perspectives. Not only fashion, but even when creating a place and a place where people can enter and say “I can’t forget this night”. For me, I like to have fun and make people feel sexy and beautiful, which is an attitude. I’m just doing my thing, living life and being a native New Yorker. I’m just doing what I always do.
The fusion between fashion and music, especially hip hop, is very iconic. How do you see yourself continuing that trend with your own collections?
I feel like it goes through with the women I wear – female artists and rappers. There is an influence of the music I play at my runway shows and at my parties. Even in my creative process, especially for the Fall/Winter season, I’ve been listening to Lil Kim and some Foxy Brown from the 90s on and off to emphasize that attitude. It’s all about puffer coats and puffer boots – those thigh-highs, to be exact. Music moves me like no other. I can go on a trip and sketch or watch a movie at night for inspiration, but there’s something about music that ignites when it comes to creativity and design.
Is there a hip hop artist you would love to do a collaboration line with?
I can’t say specifically, but I have a lot of respect for everyone from Nicki Minaj to Lil Kim to Koy LeRae and the Urban Girls who all wear LaQuan Smith and embrace the brand. Here’s the thing – unapologetically celebrating women’s empowerment, and I love that there’s a spectrum between different body types, ages and eras. We can all still unite with Laquan Smith’s piece and bring her back to life.
How should someone feel when wearing the LaQuan Smith Originals?
I say Laquan Smith is a woman’s best kept secret. TA hat means she’s walking around the room and commanding a level of attention that men and women can’t escape. She is versatile. Guys are cheering her on and girls are like, “B**ch, you better work.” It’s such a fun thing – wearing LaQuan Smith is truly an experience. She has been in that outfit her whole life and it gave her a sense of inspiration and motivation. I also feel that my business is built in a very unusual way, and girls would come up to me and ask if they have to be famous to wear one of my bras – no, that’s how she feels. When a woman wears LaQuan Smith, she feels like a mega rockstar, so here’s a take.
According to Sherry Whitfield, this year is going to be September-Spring-Summer Fashion Week. Let us know what’s in the upcoming season and what should be in everyone’s closet.

Also, congrats on making the power list. How does it feel to be recognized for your achievements?
It is honor and humiliation. I’ve always dreamed of doing what I do, and I’m not trying to be the best at anything – I just want to be the best I can be. For people to accept me and for the way I’ve chosen to live my life and unapologetically build my career, I feel blessed. I am happy to be seen and heard – We hope to continue that momentum by uplifting and supporting black creators.
You posted your recent trips to the Hamptons. Where else would you like to fly for a trip? And name three celebrities who are going along for the ride.
I’m always somewhere (laughs). I would definitely have to say Grace Jones, Halston and Tina Turner. I love those people and those are probably my girls to go out with.
