Lakers top Huskies in Houghton 5-2

Houghton, Mich No. 44 Michigan Tech doubles for the fourth time this season.

The Huskies (7-6, 4-2) snapped their second straight with one game to play before the GLIAC tournament, while the Lakers (13-5, 6-0 GLIAC) remained undefeated in conference play.

“I thought we really competed well in doubles today,” head coach Christine D’Agostini-Yep said. “Give credit to our opponents individually. We didn’t do enough to win.”

Left fielder Grace Eland (Penrith, England) capitalized through the ad to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead in the No. 1 singles. Dominika Bobic (Wroclaw, Poland) added a pair of confident backhand winners down the line and took a 6-3 lead against GVSU’s No. 12 doubles pair of Vassilia Griva and Taylor Barrett.

Neva Manas (Carmel, Indiana) and Ewa Podulka (Trzebienica, Poland) finished first at 3 doubles, while Lauren Opalewski (Oxford, Michigan) and Emily Cojocaru (Richmond Hill, Ontario) closed out a tight set on court two 6. -4.

Bobic Grivan lost a point in a 6-0 first-round win at No. 1 singles. Griva stormed back to take the second 6-3 as each player continued to battle from the start. Bobic was able to serve on match point after a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Griva last spring, winning the final set 6-3.

“Dominica played well today in singles and doubles,” D’Agostini-Yep said. “She’s really playing it safe now.”

The second set was narrowly tied at 2 singles after Eland’s first layup for Tech. Barrett, on the other hand, went on a 5-0 lead to close out the contest with a 7-3 run. Barrett finished with another 7-3 lead for the Elands.

Manas split sets with Rachel Sam at No. 3 but was unable to win the third. The Lakers closed out the game with wins in Nos. 5 and 6.

Michigan Tech is back in action Saturday against Ferris State for Senior Day at 10 a.m. Grand Valley State closes out the regular season at Lake Superior State. The top six teams in the conference standings qualify for the postseason.
