Kiwanians Steve and Kathy Borrigter enjoy international travel, and even the pandemic hasn’t slowed them down. He spoke at the Kiwanis meeting on July 19, detailing his recent trip to many countries.
They were in the UK in March. They rented a car in London and braved the “wrong” road and roundabouts to Edinburgh, Scotland, a difficult challenge (at least for American drivers).
While in Edinburgh, they toured the castle, walked around the city, and enjoyed food and drink in the city’s pubs. On their way back south, they visit York Minister, Albert and Victoria’s summer residence, the old Roman Baths, Stonehenge and Windsor Castle.
The Boerrechters were impressed by the age of the buildings, the great wealth of the monarchy, and last but not least, the delicious and international cuisine they found.
After returning to the States for a short time, they were finalizing the details to travel to Japan, but they discovered that the country was not yet open to Western tourists. After some last-minute negotiations with the airline, they changed their plans and flew to Sweden, Denmark and Sweden instead. Among the highlights of the Scandinavian adventure is a wonderful museum displaying a sunken warship built by King Gustav, whose design he copied from British ships.
And Japan? It’s still closed to tourists, but burghers still plan to go there.
