Kering’s Materials Innovation Lab to Mentor Young Designers by PT Umo

Milan – Caring Materials Innovation Lab or MIL – the luxury conglomerate Milan-based home for innovation – presents WWD exclusively in collaboration with PT Imagine.

The tie-up aims to nurture the next generation of designers and help them embrace sustainable fashion practices. As part of the project, MIL will support designers exhibiting in the S/Style Sustainable Style section at the menswear trade fair Pitti Uomo from June 13 to 16.

Over the past three years, the segment has gathered an exciting mix of international up-and-coming brands and designers with a sustainable bent.

Now in its seventh iteration, the trade show segment features 10 MIL-led brands adopting, developing, and implementing new and low-impact materials and processes, using bio-based textiles and techniques in their collections. Eco-certificates in production.

“PT’s S/Style project seems a perfect fit with Caring MIL’s open creative thinking and approach. It’s a rare partnership to support young and emerging brands that want to embrace sustainability, add innovation to low-impact capsules, and give them the opportunity to showcase new prototype materials tested or certified by MIL and materials aligned with us. The center is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2023.

The 10 brands spotted by S/Style Sustainable Style Editor and Journalist Giorgia Cantarini are Cava and Dalpaos from Italy; Designer Dhruv Kapoor from India; Isnurh from Denmark; Jeanne Friot and Steven Passaro from France; Ksenia Schneider from Ukraine; Olowo from Cote d’Ivoire; Permu from the UK, and Yang n Sang from South Korea.

“This collaboration is an important recognition of the work we are doing to promote a modern culture of responsibility in fashion,” said Lapo Cianchi, Head of Communications and Special Projects at Pitti Imagine and Secretary General of Fondazione Pitti Discovery.

“Most of all, we are happy because Kering ML can provide practical help to designers worldwide to discover and use the most innovative materials in their design studies,” he said, referring to the international appeal of the S/Style segment over the years.

According to Cantarini, the partnership represents a major milestone as it offers new brands, who often struggle to jumpstart their careers and at the same time, sustainable, cutting-edge innovation and knowledge of how to incorporate it into their design process.
