Have you ever been to school or Idyllwild? How do you handle the logistics of teaching at a school in Los Angeles?
I’ve been to Palm Springs, Joshua Tree and around there. Idyllwild was a little different from what I expected because it is surrounded by Palm Springs and Joshua Tree Desert. But I love nature and I look at pictures of Idyllwild and fall in love with the beautiful scenery. I have an apartment in Idyllwild and keep one in LA. I hope to get back to LA a few times a month, but only so I can manage my work around here. And he maintains relationships with LA people and models and the factory and production people. So it works. And I have an assistant here too so I think it will work.
What do you like most about teaching?
I don’t think it’s necessarily just about fashion, but anyone who is a teacher wants to see the process, students grow, become better, and start to become better people. I’m very picky about craftsmanship, clean look, and attention to detail in your patterns, and so I push my students that way.
You came from music to fashion design. How has that shaped you as a fashion student and how can that help your students at Idyllwild Arts?
I think I want to be exposed to a lot of different arts. I have experienced classical piano for students for over 30 years. And if anyone studies something hard, you can see another layer of understanding. You will begin to see connections with art, dance, and more. There are nt mamnppopel like me get fashion from adiffeetnynt media. I think I can share that experience.
