Karolina Pliskova beats Victoria Azarenka in US Open quarterfinals

In a clash between former world No. 1 players, 22nd seed Karolina Pliskova advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open on Monday, beating 26th seed Victoria Azarenka.

Pliskova took three hours to beat three-time finalist Azarenka 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-2.

The two tour veterans square off for the first time since 2019. Pliskova will next face No. 6 seed Aryna Sabalenka. .

Pliskova battled through her match against Azarenka, keeping her unforced error count to a minimum. On Monday night, Pliskova had 53 winners but only 36 unforced errors. Azarenka’s differential was still positive, but she only had nine winners more than unforced errors.

On the other hand, Aryna Sabalenka managed to bounce back by defeating Danielle Collins 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. In the first set of the match, Collins ran off 12 winners against eight unforced errors, holding off Sabalenka’s 8 winners.

In the second set, Sabalenka held firm as Collins had to work hard to find her forehand range. She lost only two other games in the tournament.

Sabalenka needed 2 hours and 29 minutes to overtake Collins.
