Kakao has established an internal panel of technology officers to assess the ethics and social impact of technologies, the company said Monday.

The “Tech for Good Committee” examines the ethical and social aspects of the cocoa company’s technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) programs and automated algorithms.

The committee evaluates the company’s guidelines and communicates the changes that should be made in each company.

The committee is chaired by Lee Chae-yong, Head of Technology at Kakao, and includes technology and ethics officers from subsidiaries including Kakao Payments, Kakao Entertainment, Kakao Brain and Kakao Mobility.

It will be placed under the Corporate Alignment Center which oversees the operations of the subsidiaries.

Technology ethics departments are established in each cacao company. The Human Rights and Technology Ethics Group conducts research on international human rights protection and technology ethics guidelines.

“The committee strives to lead deep discussions about Kakao as a leading IT company contributing to the sustainability of our society,” said Kakao CEO Hong Eun Tak in a press release.
