John McAfee, a cybersecurity and software businessman, was found dead Wednesday in the cell of the Spanish prison, the same day that the country’s high court ordered his extradition to the United States accused of evading millions of dollars in taxes.
A Catalan justice official said McAfee’s body had been found in Brians prison, south of Barcelona. The Catalan justice department added in a statement that his death appeared to be a suicide and that the penitentiary services tried and did not revive him after finding him in his cell.
Earlier in the day, the Spanish national court ruled McAfee’s extradition to the U.S. for “tax offenses related to the years 2016, 2017 and 2018.”
McAfee had been taken custody in Spain in October and was arrested on remand. In November, the US embassy filed a formal request for his extradition. U.S. authorities alleged that McAfee had earned more than $ 10 million between 2014 and 2018, but had not paid any taxes, and that they used the leaders to hide their wealth and income.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, McAfee, which founded the antivirus software company that bears his name, hid millions of dollars in revenue from U.S. tax authorities, including the promotion of cryptocurrencies and the sale of the rights of his life story.
In an informative testimony last week in which he discussed at length his political ambitions, McAfee, who had previously called for the nomination of the libertarian party to the US presidency, told the Spanish court that he had paid millions of dollars in taxes and that their companies had paid billions. He claimed that the U.S. tax authorities were corrupt.
He added that for someone his age (about 76) he would spend the rest of his life in prison if he was extradited to the United States and asked the court to “consider these questions.” But the prosecutor in the case accused him of exaggerating his political activity and described him as a “tax rebel, a millionaire who doesn’t want to pay taxes, which is a crime in every country, including the United States.”
The court also dismissed McAfee’s health issues as unfounded, saying he “does not face a life sentence that would deprive him of life imprisonment” if convicted.
McAfee was a highly successful software innovator a decade ago and sold its McAfee cybersecurity group to Intel for $ 7.6 billion. He fled after the murder of his neighbor in 2012 Belize. In 2019, McAfee said it had fled the United States with its yacht because it faced criminal tax charges.
