It’s rare when you watch a fashion show and love every look the designer presents. That’s what happened at JJ Valaya’s show at the FDCI India Couture Week 2022, which celebrated the couturier’s 30 years in fashion. The audience was filled with cheers and excitement as models brought out the best of what the Valaya brand has offered to its customers over the past three decades.
The show started with the story of how the designer went from Jagsharanjit Singh Ahluwalia to JJ Valaya – a NIFT student who started his own brand after graduation. The collection was brand new with signature pieces from the last 30 years of Valaya’s work. Each look was quintessentially Indian, with a hint of Spanish, and unapologetically glamorous. His costume and jewelry sparkled beneath the arches, evoking admiration and admiration from the audience.
Live music accompanied the models, a magical mix of piano, sitar, sarangi and several drum forms. The Spanish influence was also evident in the music.
The designer, in his statement about the collection, said, “Every year, for the past 30 years, my inspirational journeys begin somewhere deep in my soul and are inspired by something visible that captures me. I have lucked out on visual resources, both in books and travel. It is fair to say that my passion for global cultures (especially those connected in one way or another with spices and silk lines) is my constant love.
The story behind this season’s inspiration goes back a million years to Spain, and this isn’t the first time I’ve been inspired by this magical country. But how can one fully and creatively explore any objects with such an illustrious past in one collection! So, I present to you ALMA (which means ‘soul’ in Spanish), a new collection for the 2022-23 couture seasons. My three permanent expressions (Royale ~ Nomade ~ ArtDeco) find their soulmates in three different but familiar aspects of Spain:
1. Matadors (Matador de Toros) clothes
2. Patterns on Manton Shawl (Manton de Manila).
3. Hand fan (Pericon) patterns
“Luxurious fabrics, elegant details, inspired prints and of course our timeless and much-loved embroideries combine this year’s Couture collection with Spain to celebrate the journey. This show also marks the completion of 30 years of JJ Valaya, a journey we thoroughly enjoyed,” he added.
