A traveler believes that he has found a way to get special care during the flight.

Jeremy McClellan, 26, recently tried a “hack” he saw on TikTok that involved buying Starbucks gift cards and giving them to flight attendants in hopes of getting perks in return.

In a video of himself posted on the platform, Mr. McClellan bought $130 worth of Starbucks gift cards and gave them to his crew on a long-haul flight from New York to Abu Dhabi.

“Are you a flight attendant for another airline? And he explained, ‘No, show me my love, I thought I’d extend my appreciation, you know, it’s a long flight and I appreciate you.’

“Then I went and found my seat at the back of the plane.”

Mr McClellan said there was another passenger in the previously reserved window seat and she took off her shoes and socks and sat comfortably.

He said that when the passenger got out of his seat, he was soon pulled over by a senior member of the crew and offered a seat in an empty emergency exit row.

“I think it’s worth $130. It wasn’t business class, I didn’t get a full-flat seat, but I think it was worth the gift cards to get a whole row to myself.”

“And they were very nice to me the whole flight. I slept for a while and when I woke up there was a nice little bag (that she had) my mom packed lunch with a bottle of water, a sandwich and some snacks on the seat next to me.

Mr McClellan said being kind, showing appreciation and respect for others is a life lesson.

And while he’s hoping for a free upgrade to business class, he says he’d still be happy to make a flight attendant day if he didn’t get anything from giving away the gift cards.

His video has been viewed 2.8 million times in six days and has nearly 300,000 likes.

Some TikTok users suggested that the “hack” failed because reserving the same seat with extra legroom would have been cheaper than spending $130 on gift cards.

Others applauded the idea, saying it was a kind gesture either way.

One woman wrote: “I’m a flight attendant and I’ll give you all I can when you bring us nice gifts.

“A flight attendant here… if you say ‘hello’ when I greet you (you wouldn’t believe how often we’ve been ignored) I’d give it my all,” added another.

“If you bring gift cards like FA or SB, they will do anything to make your flight better. We need $5 coffee more than you know. I promise,” said the third.

One Tik Tok user joked about the trend, with his comment garnering more than 17,000 likes, saying it “actually started with flight attendants.”
