When the creative force behind one of the most epic stories of the 20th and early 21st centuries makes its name as a vehicle for consumer entertainment, the bar is set very high. But Jean-Paul Gaultier’s intelligence – as well as optimism and beauty – his Fashion freak show More than cleaning.
Fascinating and charismatic, Gaultier created 100 costumes for 18 actors – singers, dancers, circus performers – each at the top of their game to create 400 costumes. Although the season is a celebration of beauty, Monsieur Gaultier’s show – composed with music by Tony Marshall and the famous Nile Rodgers Orchestra – also tells a beautiful, simple and inspiring story about a very different and very special boy. He found his place in the world.
Combining elements of cabaret with stadium rock level projections and a super-club atmosphere (although the crowd is relatively calm and reserved). Jean Paul Gaultier Fashion Freak Show It’s basically a biographical musical with an artistic twist. We begin with Almodóvar superstar Rossi de Palma as the future legendary master of design who tries to humiliate his son by drawing in a classroom (in a very stylized way, of course). But, in many ways, Gaultier is unusual. The bullying attempt failed because his peers immediately noticed his talent and wanted his paintings and other creative output. From the get-go, this theatrical experience, regardless of high-fashion iconoclasm, proves to be one of triumph and inspiration rather than anger and anguish.
A variety of musical numbers, from Haylen’s arrangement of the Torch Song to exotic, choreographed dance pieces by Meron Motin, take us through time and place in linear order. The visuals with Pierre Cardin are particularly impressive with the many other tables that follow – including vignettes of punk, a Parisian palace nightclub and 80s Soho, among others.
While Freak Show It’s primarily about visual and audio sensations, it also has soul and pathos. Gaultier told the story of how he and his partner fell in love together, wearing a double-sized Breton shirt tied and cosseted together. The Voices of the Nightclub and the Future of the AIDS Epidemic’where is patrick west…?Now with the simple image of a double jumper captured by one, we share sadness with a very simple yet poignant touch: beautiful and heartbreaking.
Inspiring and visually glorious, this ‘freak show’ is just plain old fun. It’s very aphrodisiac but not tacky for a second, even if it’s playful and decidedly not loud. While celebrating different expressions of beauty, the show doesn’t even shy away from tokenism or finger-wagging. On the one hand, it’s like going to a blockbuster art exhibition where all the work comes to you (perfect for the tired legs of the JPG-raised gen-seed). On the other hand, it offers everything that makes us want to dance and no one can stop you – so get your groove on. As the maestro himself admonished, ‘Embrace your fear. For fear, it is very funny.’
If you grew up with Jean Paul Gaultier, brace yourself for something historically rewarding but absolutely futuristic. If the Eurotrash era or the first masculine haute-couture approaches predate men in dresses, enrich yourself with the history and style of the man without whom there would be no Alexander McQueen or Harry Styles. A real treat and great value for money, Fashion freak show It will bring you profit and make you happy.
