Israeli lidar startup Innoviz will supply lidar sensors and perception software for all vehicles with autonomous driving capabilities across Volkswagen Group brands, the company said on Tuesday.

Innoviz will work directly with Cariad SE, VW’s automotive software company, to integrate the technology into future VW vehicles.

The partnership with VW is Innoviz’s third design win with a Tier 1 supplier. In April, BMW revealed that Innoviz lidar would be on the 2023 BMW i7 electric vehicles, and in May of last year, Innoviz was selected by an unnamed Tier 1 automotive supplier for its autonomous shuttle program.

VW has yet to announce which models will be built with Innoviz technology first, but the automaker has been making several moves to boost its advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving capabilities. Earlier this year, Carid and Bosch teamed up to develop software for autonomous driving used in VW cars.In May, VW selected Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Ride platform for ADAS and autonomous driving.

Innoviz said the VW program, which will bring a forward-looking order book of $4 billion, will take the startup’s total estimated sales to $6.6 billion.

Using a 905 nanometer (nm) laser, Innoviz says it can achieve high performance with a viewing range of up to 300 meters at a low cost. Lidar competitor Velodyne also uses a 905 nm laser and claims to be able to reach up to 300 meters. However, Velodyne’s high-performance lidar is 128 lines at up to 20 frames per second. For comparison, the Innoviz 600 has up to 20 frames per second, the company says.

Kaylaf said Velodyne products sell for thousands of dollars, while Innoviz costs hundreds. TechCrunch could not confirm costs at Velodyne.

“What sets Innoviz right and this deal is us winning the distinction as a Tier 1 supplier,” Khelaf told TechCrunch. “Innoviz is the only lidar manufacturer to achieve this designation.” This marks a major shift not only for Innoviz, but for the entire automotive industry in the way automakers collaborate with their technology suppliers. As a Tier 1 supplier, we benefit from direct access to OEMs and increase profit margins and profits.
