Ingleside, Texas — Ingleside ISD is holding its first-ever Trash Fashion Show, luncheon and auction. Students are turning waste into fashion by recycling it.
The fashion show was announced in February and Ingleside High School held its first assembly in the first week of March. Students brought in pre-drawn designs and ideas they wanted to create. Students may compete alone or in teams of three.
Ingleside High School senior Samantha Stillman was a participant and trash creator who took someone’s trash and turned it into her treasure.
“We were looking online for scrap fashion show ideas and we saw like these giant wings and they had these mosaic magazine pieces. We took that and made it our own thing. The backdrop is all the curtains from previous promotions. All the magazine clips are from prom catalogs. Our curtains are old dresses. “We used a broken plastic bag for the straps,” Stillman said.
At the Trash Show, 18 pieces will walk the runway. All costumes are made from 85% recyclable materials. Many of the materials were donated by community members, faculty and students.
“They soon ran together. They formulated many ideas and brought them to me. Yes, I said absolutely. Did I say guns? We will find them. Glues? We will find them.” said Stacey Edlin, an English teacher at Ingleside High School.
Edlin said that while each group has a different vision, the goal is the same.
“They came up with a design, something that looked like a ball gown, with a train and a tail. You know, use what you have and try to make something out of what you’ve got,” Edlin said.
First place will win $250, second place will win $175, and third place will win $100.
Microvich Primary School students made highlights for the event. There will also be some artwork done by other students. Attendees will prepare chicken alfredo and delicious treats will be provided by the Ingleside High School Culinary Arts Program.
All proceeds from the Trashion Show will go toward Ingleside Project Graduation and Microwich Elementary’s end-of-the-year field trips.
The event will take place on Saturday, April 22 at 11:00 am. It will be held at Ingleside High School at 2807 Mustang Drive. Individual tickets are $15 and will be sold at the door. If interested in purchasing tickets, call 361-776-2906.
