DYER COUNTY, TEN – March 29th celebrates Mom and Pop Business Owners Day! It’s a day to appreciate the hard work and dedication it takes to run a small business.

Independent businesses are important to society. Compared to retail stores, they offer personalized care, greater convenience and a more comfortable environment.

A good example is privately owned pharmacies. Martin James, owner of James & Wilkes Pharmacy, decided to open his own business after 36 years of working at the chain pharmacy.

“We wanted to be able to practice the way we thought pharmacy should be done, to have enough staff and spend time with our patients and customers and do that. We were afraid to work for big box stores, we couldn’t do that,” James said.

It takes time and patience to build trust not only in your business but in the community.

“We jumped in the deep end and swam. It took two years to start the business, but now we offer free delivery, we have a boutique. We’re swimming, and we’re floating, and things are going well for the store,” James said.

Having local pharmacists can make a lasting impact on patient health and quality of life.

“I believe independent pharmacies are the backbone of the community. We care, I think, we care more about you. We have time to spend with you, we know you by name, we know your family and where your kids come from. There are only people and families I’ve known for 30 years,” James said.

To the pharmacy, running their business is much more than seeing another patient or writing a prescription.

“We’re proud of it. We’re proud of our employees and their friendliness. And it’s more than enough to work here,” says James.

James says it’s never too late to start your own business.

“If that’s what you want, I’ll follow my dream, and that was mine. I was 56 years old when I opened my own pharmacy. I wish I had done it 30 years earlier,” he said.

To celebrate, be sure to get out and visit a small business near you.
