In Ghana, folklore celebrates African fashion with intimate dinners.

The African fashion world was buzzing with excitement last week when The Folklore Group, which promotes African and black brands in the global market, hosted its first fashion dinner in Accra, Ghana.

Opened at The Mix in the heart of Accra’s bustling Osu suburb, Folklore Dinner welcomed various fashion industry players in Accra including designers, stylists, celebrities and editors. The elegant restaurant doubles as a creative event space and design center. The night’s audience comes out in full force, dressed in their finest, ready to feed and push the needle forward. Among the guests of the evening were music artist Jidena, Olamide Ayomikun Olowe of cult beauty brand Topicals and New York magazine’s philanthropic social editor Nana Agyemang.

“Hosting our first event in Accra is a special moment for me. I have traveled to many African countries, but Ghana has made me feel most at peace and at home. Amira Rasool, Founder and CEO of Folklore Group, said in her opening remarks. Hosting a dinner for Rasool in Accra means shining a light on the wealth of fashion talent that is often underrepresented in Ghana and the African continent as a whole.

“We were very intentional about growing our brand partners in Ghana because the talent here is so fresh and we don’t get the same recognition as designers in other African countries,” explains Rasool. “There is so much partying and entertainment in December Accra and we want to contribute to this special occasion by bringing together a close group of African and Diaspora designers, media executives, musicians, stylists and entrepreneurs to celebrate and collaborate with each other. “

Rose gari and squid, chicken asasa and more were prepared for the guests to enjoy sumptuously delicious African dishes paired with fine wines. In between the trainings, there were warm and spirited discussions as the participants discussed current trends and shared their ideas on ways to grow the African fashion industry through partnerships and collaborations.
