Makariv, Ukraine – Three Ukrainian families have new homes after a group of Idaho teenagers raised $50,000 for a humanitarian trip.
Chase Miller, Lachlan Hacke, Landon and Jaden Murphy spent a week in Ukraine putting the finishing touches on the modular homes they bought using the donations they raised. The youngsters said it was a life-changing experience.
“It is far from the truth. It’s hard to believe what happened in Ukraine,” said Landon Murphy. “It really shows me how lucky I am not to live in a country that wears it.”
The modular homes were built and delivered by a Ukrainian company that the team met on a previous trip. The non-profit ToUkraineWithLove.org has helped families find fully furnished homes worth about $15,000 each.
The first house was a family of five members. The group was able to build their new house next to the old one, which was reduced to rubble during the war.
“Everything is destroyed. You can see the remains of some of the kitchen appliances and where the beds used to be,” said Chase Miller.
“There’s always an opportunity to help and if enough people help us, we can change lives.”

The work attracted nearby residents who were eager to share their war stories with the men. Landon Murphy remembers talking to a woman who lost her mother and daughter in the attack on the twins. She was left to care for an 8-month-old baby without a roof over her head.
“They lost everything, they lost their home,” Murphy said. “There are so many other families that could be helped if we raised more money from the community.”
The youth sometimes got a glimpse of what it was like to live in a war zone.
“We’ve been waiting for the air raid sirens to go off when we’ve been inside,” Chase Miller said.
Although the journey was tiring, he said it was worth it to be there in person to donate these houses to needy families.
“Everybody was so shocked and so emotional that they were crying,” Miller said. “Everyone was hugging and it was very touching to see.”
The teenagers hope to raise more money to make a second trip and help more families build their new lives.
“There’s always an opportunity to help, and if enough people help, we can really change lives,” Miller said.
