More than 500 business, education and non-profit leaders from Seattle-based Computer Education Nonprofit Code.org have partnered with state governments and education leaders to bring more computer science opportunities to K-12 students across the US.
Leaders of technology giants, including Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Matan, Alphabet and others, are signing letters of action with CEOs of Nike, UPS, AT&T, Walgreens, T-Mobile, Zillow Group, Expedia Group and others.
“At a time when every industry is affected by digital technology, our schools must teach every student how technology works, not just consumers, but learn to be creative,” the letter said. “Instead, this basic skill is learned only by a few lucky ones and has left most students, especially young women and students of color behind.”
The signatories are committed to creating jobs for computer science students in all US cities and in all sectors, Code.org said in a statement.
“Computer science should be as important today as basic biology or algebra,” said Hadi Patovi, CEO of Code.org. “The United States has seen a great deal of initiative behind this idea, and today’s announcement makes it clear that it is time for action.”
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates tweeted on Tuesday that computer science has changed the course of his life since he was 13 years old.
