How women in mining are a driving force in AI and hyper-automation

A number of organizations have formed to promote the contributions of women in technology, enhancing career paths, technical expertise, visibility in the field, and more.

In fact, our parent company Acceleration Economy’s annual Summit North American event hosts a Women in Tech track that brings together female leaders from the Microsoft business applications ecosystem to connect with other women and provide inspirational learning from messages and conversations. In the year I had the opportunity to play an organizing role in that meeting at the end of 2022.

So, I was thrilled when I recently had the opportunity to meet with the leader of an organization that is helping to advance the contribution of women in technology. This organization empowers women in the community to strengthen their leadership skills, learn more about the mining process, and increase their impact.

How women in the mining process are established

In the year In the fall of 2021, Christine Hunter, vice president of field marketing for North America at Celonis, had the opportunity to learn about organizations dedicated to helping women advance in technology. This prompted her to begin researching and identifying the need for a community that serves women in the mining industry. A pioneer in the mining space, Selonis is one of the top 10 AI/Hyperautomation vendors selected by Acceleration Economy expert analysts.

In the process, she met Gabriela Gallic, a manager at Deloitte who mines “women in progress” at the top of her LinkedIn profile. When she met Gallic, the pair realized they both had an interest in creating a community specific to the process mining discipline.

In the year In early 2022, their plans began to fall into place. Hunter and Gallic meet with Natalie Wolf (Customer Success Consultant, Wolf Consulting), Dina Tzonev (Senior Manager, Ceylonis) and Julie Bruce (Director, Customer Value, Ceylonis). Together they have created the Women in Progress community, a place where women in the field can leverage their influence and strengthen their leadership skills.

The founders knew they wanted community, even though they all had different ideas of what community looked like. The team has focused on three key areas:

  • Online community: An ongoing place where women can connect and receive content and learning resources
  • Virtual and in-person meetings: Bringing women into formal structures, hosting panel discussions and hearing from a combination of mentors and end-user clients who share their best practices
  • mentoring program; Offering a matching program on their website where members can apply to become a mentor or advisor

“We want to strengthen their leadership. We want to amplify their impact — the impact they already have in their organizations,” Hunter says. “And we want to lock arms together and pave the way for process mining and multi-generational mining.”

Overcoming challenges in the mining industry

Women in Mining brings together women leaders who work in the field of mining, study technology concepts, or conduct research in the field. The organization allows women’s voices to be heard by creating a community where best practices can be shared. It provides a global network for women to learn from each other, helping to collectively shape the space for process mining technology and digital transformation.

There’s a lot of research that assesses the representation of women in tech—and how limited that representation currently is. Women founders at Mining Process recognize that there is plenty of room for growth. Their ongoing work aims to answer key questions.

  • How can we find a way for women to know that there are opportunities in this space?
  • How do women learn about this technology?
  • How do you see other women in the mining process?
  • How are they supported as they begin their journey in this technology landscape?

Paving the way for future generations

“I really believe that representation is important. When you see someone who looks like you, who maybe you don’t understand or don’t even know exists, once you see them, you start connecting the dots: ‘Oh, this is an opportunity for me,'” Hunter explains.

They want to continue to invite more women into the organization as it has progressed so far, so that women in mining can be representatives for future generations and feel supported once they enter this technology market segment.

Hunter emphasizes how individuals don’t need to have a tech background to join Women in Progress – you just need to have the will and desire to learn. “Whether it’s on the marketing side or content creator or video production… maybe on the technical side or services or consulting… there are many different roles in technology. It’s not a one-size-fits-all journey to engage with technology.

While it’s important for women to create change, it’s also important to partner with partners and be a welcoming voice in the industry. The three pillars – an online community, virtual and in-person meetings and a mentoring program – enabled women in the process mining industry to immerse themselves in the community and connect with partners.

For example, mentoring provides a two-way learning and networking opportunity for women to grow in their careers. More experienced advisors can come back to assist an advisor who is earlier in their career. In addition, the organization is in discussions with various universities to bring education and counseling to students in the field of mining. These relationships with universities begin either through personal connections by women in the community with the university or through the Ceylonese Academic Alliance program.

“It’s really important to connect with larger communities and foster our own personal learning,” Hunter says.

At Celosphere 2022, Celonis’ annual customer conference in November, the company hosted a panel discussion where panelists shared their personal journeys about how they have engaged in process mining and how they are driving digital transformation initiatives forward in their organizations. He talked about how critical it is to create high-performing teams and to create a way forward where diversity is not only in people, but also in thinking.

In fact, “Creating New Perspectives” was the main theme at Cellofair. “When you have different voices or ideas, you can bring new perspectives to the table. That’s critical to continuing innovation in a company and moving your business forward,” says Hunter. Other keynotes included discussions on the need for delegation and not being afraid of failure.

2023 Outlook

Hunter said she is excited for another year with the Women in Mining Community in Progress. They are looking forward to expanding their network internationally as they look forward to welcoming more women and partners to the community next year.

They plan to grow their mentoring program by hosting more networking and educational events, both virtual and in person. Additionally, they work collaboratively with universities as well as other end-user and client organizations.

These expansions allow Women in Process Mining to continue its mission: to elevate women’s voices, amplify their influence, and pave the way for greater leadership and representation in process mining.
