How to recreate the row in this fall

New seasons bring new beginnings but also new challenges. Every fall, I’m faced with the same thing: How can I create the row without spending a million bazillion dollars?? For me, the answer is almost always two. First stop: Uniqlo. Second stop: My mirror, where I try to paint my Uniqlo statue using the tools I have on hand, such as belts, bags and shoes. Uniqlo’s basics are great for the minimalist aesthetic of the line. (See also: COS, Everlane and Frankie Shop.) Indeed, nothing matches The Row’s quality. But with a few accessories and styling techniques – increasing the size, reducing the size, sorting, etc. – I can get the image very close. And since The Row recently introduced colors outside of neutrals (Breathe!), I have so many more options to work with this season (although I can’t for the life of me find this same perfect shade of purple). Below, my attempt to recreate Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s Fall 2022 vision in miniature.

Row Fedrino top in organic cotton

Perfectly cropped but not too cropped mock-neck T-shirt with ruffled wings. I have a sweatshirt from Universal (RIP) in the same color, and it’s much more vibrant than the greens in my closet.

Frankie Shop Karina cut a cotton-jersey T-shirt.

Unfortunately, this version is a bit cropped, but you can size up and cut the sleeves, as the original has frayed wings, or pull your pants up above your waist.

BabaĆ  jumper no59 wild fern

Since it is a basic t-shirt, this thin sweater can be the best transition to fall, and BabaĆ ’s colors are also rich.

The top of the row in cashmere

I’ve never been more convinced that a pumpkin is actually pretty. (Pumpkin-spice is normally added to everything!)

Polo Ralph Lauren Stretch Ribbed Turtleneck

It’s hard to find an overpowering orange, but this one from Polo Red is a beautiful shade of red. It may not be as soft as The Row’s cashmere, but you can easily layer it under a purple sweater and white button-down shirt, as the brand did in its lookbook.

Lou Lou Studio Murano Cashmere Sweater

That’s a lot, but it’s still $1,000 cheaper!

Row Slouchy banana two bag in nylon

Prada has stuck with nylon but doesn’t currently offer a bag with such a natural shape, and I appreciate how this one doesn’t have any logos or duds.

Uniqlo round mini shoulder bag

Becky Malinski’s shopping newsletter turned me on to this bag. You really can’t beat that price!

Top of the row Ciles in organic cotton

I chose to recreate this entire look myself because it seemed so doable. A red long-sleeved shirt, belt, and studded black pants – how hard can it be?

Uniqlo Extra Fine Merino Crew Neck Long-Sleeve Sweater

Whether you’re trying to recreate the tiered look, these skinny sweaters are great for fall layering and come in an array of colors. I have at least four.

Strange overstaffing in housing

Gigi Hadid launched her DTC cashmere brand as the resident guest, and it has tons of colors and fits, including this red oversized sweater.

Isabel Marant Black Zip Leather Belt

I’ve had this Isabel Marant belt for years and years, and I wear it with all my skirts.

Uniqlo wide-leg pants

When I found these online I immediately bought them. It’s hard to find wide leg pants that don’t look baggy on me, and these ones have a cropped waist and don’t look baggy or baggy.

Look, mother! I’m a row model! just kidding. I wish. (For one, I wouldn’t be smiling if I were a row model.) In retrospect, I should have done a few things differently. Here are my uses:

  • Increase with your knitting size. The class gets even better when it comes to perfecting the row look.
  • Wear black sports shoes. (I’m addicted to color coordination so I wore red but the row look is all black.)
  • No note on the pants (10/10), but if you want to look more “fashionable” you can size up. Uniqlo does free alterations!
  • Buy a lottery ticket for a chance to buy the real thing. It’s a very beautiful and quality garment.
