Tintap Photographic Studios, Silver and Cedar, have grown in popularity over the past three years, much to the admiration of most Tick Talk audiences.

Matt and Katy run their Phoenix, Arizona, wet plate studio, which employs technology in the 1860s to provide truly unique photography to their clients.

But despite the couple’s use of 19th-century tools, the couple spoke up. PetaPixel It is the 21st century tool they use to grow their business.

“Right now, every major commission in the last three months has come from Tick Talk,” Katie said.

“We were caught months ago, as Tick Talk videos were infected. It was going on, and we could not sign up for more than two months or we would not have life.

The couple estimates that they have shot more than 2,000 portraits, a success that has allowed Katie to quit her company, and Matt, a tattoo artist and photographer, has reduced the number of days she can paint.

Amazing success

At first, Matt and Katie were skeptical that such an old-school business would work in modern America. Matt was given the opportunity to shoot photos directly at the Tattoo Convention and wanted to do something different.

“I didn’t want to do simple things like polaroid or fast film, I just wanted to do something more handmade and make the experience a little bigger,” Matt said.

“It’s something I’ve always known about tintip, and I said ‘trouble it’, and I bought everything I needed. At first I bought all the wrong things, then there was not much information.

During the first two days of the Tattoo Convention, the couple “sat on their paws” and things seemed awful.

But then two tattoos were made on their own, and on the third day, they wanted everyone to be photographed. We’ve got a lot of business owners and I’ve emailed them to set up pop-ups. ”

Why Tintype?

In today’s fast-paced, ever-expanding digital media, Katie says she really misses the “reality that people can convey in their families.”

“This is not on their phone or laptop, everyone can look at their old photos, they have a way to make a family heritage.

“A lot of people tell us, ‘We don’t have any family photos at home’ or we don’t take family photos. ‘

“They don’t have to do a million different layouts or try a strategy they don’t want, they can just sit there and be themselves,” Matt says.

Kathy adds: “We don’t even encourage smiles because it’s more accurate, it’s more experience than making 200 photos.

Matt

“No matter how beautiful they are, it’s hard not to like them. We shot more than 2,000 portraits, but only five people blinked.”

Tintype Kit and Method

Matt uses a Deardorff V8, an 8 × 10 camera, with an old Petzval lens. Deardorff can hit 5 × 7 and 4 × 5. It sometimes turns into Kodak Eastman D2, which is 5 × 7.

Matt wet boards are made of aluminum, but in the 1800s, the plates were made of metal. Amazingly, when Matt takes out the silver nitrate to shoot and process the image, the plate dries.

The couple pulls the big old camera with them around. In fact, during Kovid, when they arrived at the customer’s front yard and had a photo drive in their truck, they had a driveway.

At their Silver and Cedar Studios, Matt uses a large amount of strobe light to expose the dish to 3,600 watts. For comparison, the average speed is around 200 watts.

“ISO is 0-1, there is almost no film grain, you can’t measure light, it’s a lot of trial and error,” Matt.

The chemicals used by Matt are important, the age of the chemicals and the temperature at which they are exposed are very important to the overall image.

“My silver nitrate is my main focus, otherwise you will get unusual images in no way,” says Matt.

TikTok Tintype

The couple joked that they were arguing over the use of Tiktok before creating three and a half million likes on their videos.

“We thought we should dance. The video we posted for the first time got over 80,000 views and we don’t know what’s good there, we said, ‘Is this good?’ We were told. ” Says Katie.

The couple now have four portraits on a regular basis three days a week, so at least 12 appointments each weekend.

“Most generations of young people have never experienced film processing, so when they see it with their own hands, they ask, ‘What is this magic?’

More work can be seen on their website, TikTok and Instagram.
