ALEXANDRIA, VA – September is the month that ushers in a new fashion season, so I took this opportunity to meet Alexandria resident stylist Havin Baucom II and his wife, lifestyle and style influencer Christina Baucom. Both federal employees, the Baucoms are fashion enthusiasts who immerse themselves in the industry by creating digital content and curating one-of-a-kind looks for their clients. Their philosophy is to wear what makes you feel good. I delve into Baucom’s fashion aesthetic to find out what inspires them in this edition of Alexandria Noir.
Zebra: Fashion is clearly your passion. What made you both decide to enter the fashion industry?
Mr. Baucom: I was only 22 years old when someone asked me what I like and what I like. I couldn’t answer the question at the time, which made me think back on my life and reassess what makes Heavy happy. That’s when I realized that fashion is something that has fascinated me since childhood. From my earliest memories, I have been diligent in strategically using my creativity and limited resources to develop a fashion aesthetic that turned into a career working for several Fortune 500 companies and leading to the creation of my own brand.
Mrs. Baucom: My appreciation for fashion started in my family. My parents are very fashionable and sticklers about image and how you present yourself to others. Their basic structure blossomed my interest in all things fashion. For me, it provides a fun outlet to express myself. The pandemic has allowed me to build my presence by launching my blog and social media platforms. I believe that your choice of clothing can represent who you are before you open your mouth.
Zebra: What is your styling process?
Mr. Baucom: The main reasons for my process are based on chance and weather. For example, if I have to attend a formal event in summer, I wear light colors and weather-friendly and breathable fabrics. After these factors are resolved, I will enter the layout that shows my practical difference.
Mrs. Baucom: My process matches my mood and what I want to wear for that particular day. Mixing and matching different patterns and images helps me set the direction of my day. Over the past couple of years, I’ve challenged myself to be more spontaneous with my fashion choices and wear bolder, brighter colors that I never really explored before the pandemic due to the nature of my career as a federal attorney.
Zebra: What influences your aesthetic style? Do you have a style icon that inspires you?
Mrs. Baucom: I would say that my mother’s style left a big impression on me. However, if I could dress like anyone in the world, it would be Rihanna. I really admire how fashion friendly she is and how she can wear anything and make it her own. I try to combine both of my inspirations into looks that reflect my love for vintage and timeless images with bright colors.
Mr. Baucom: My inspiration comes from my community. I take ideas from everyone because each person’s beauty aspects inspire me to come up with ideas that enhance my style. The representation of someone who sums this up for me is Omari Hardwick, the lead actor in the TV show. Power. Everything he wore was impeccable and on point, from his business to formal attire.
Zebra: What’s a must-have fashion staple for everyone rolling in for fall?
Mr. Baucom: Whether formal or business, I strongly recommend everyone to have a blue blazer in their wardrobe. It’s a versatile garment that can be dressed up or down. For those who don’t wear it at all, a dark burgundy or green bomber jacket is a great option for the colder months of autumn.
Mrs. Baucom: My fall staple is to have a structured coat. Especially structured camel color coat. I think it’s a very classic and perfect layering piece. You can easily put it on your work clothes or sweats and it instantly elevates your look.
Zebra: What are some of your favorite Alexandria establishments and why?
Mr. Baucom: Jenny’s Amazing Ice Cream in Old Town is my number one. I have never had any ice cream that could compare to theirs and I find myself there all the time. I get three scoops every time I go, and I make sure the Texas Sheet Cake and Coffee Ice Cream are always part of my order.
Mrs. Baucom: I love Italian food, and Alexandria has some great options. Lena’s Wood Fired Pizza and Mia’s Italian Kitchen are our staples. The vibe in both of these restaurants is great for date nights or hanging out with friends. I’m a big fan of Mint Condition when it comes to shopping. The designer consignment items they offer are in great condition and can be up to 60% off the retail price.
Zebra: What’s next for Baucoms?
Mr. Baucom: I recently launched my clothing line, H. Baucom, which focuses on custom and formal wear. The brand is focused on catering to the style needs of brides and grooms for weddings. I create everything from dress shirts to pants.
Mrs. BaucomI was given the opportunity to work with Express as a brand ambassador for their holiday campaign. I continue to create digital content that resonates with people to show how fashion can be incorporated into their everyday lives.
