Hair for a reason to hold the ninth hair and fashion show

On March 26, Hair for a Cause’s ninth annual hair and fashion show will be held at the Callaway Conference Center.
In the year Created in 2012 by Lakita Harmon, the show was started to give back to the community.
“God gave me a vision to give back to the community,” Harmon said. “I started to gather friends and some family members and finally in 2012 I formed a committee to help put on the first hair show.”
Executive director Renee Adams said hundreds of people typically attend the show.
“The crowd was smaller because of Covid. Before that, an average of over 300 people were coming to the show and the community came together to support the recipients,” Adams said. Just seeing the hard work and community come together is such a blessing.
Harmon said he will have more than 100 models from more than 30 sponsors this year. There will be vendors and food trucks on site.
The event aims to raise money for two to three people every year, all diagnosed with terminal diseases. This year’s honorees are DeLorean Norman, Kawana Burts and Dwight Kelly.
Burts has lupus and traveled to Carrollton to receive medication and injections for her disease. Norman was diagnosed in September 2022 with synovial sarcoma, a rare and aggressive soft tissue disease that required chemotherapy and is currently undergoing extensive radiation. Kelly, a double amputee, died in 2011. He was diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease in 2012 and is currently on dialysis three times a week.
Harmon said they hope to raise about $15,000 this year, giving the recipients $5,000 each.
In the nine years he’s been on the show, Harmon says the best part has been seeing joy in the face of respect.
“It’s been a blessing to see smiles on the faces of all my honorees,” Harmon said. “I feel like there are things in your life that you’re holding back, whether it’s work, math, or self-care. Something inside of me made me feel good knowing that I was able to help someone, that my staff and I were able to help someone. We didn’t put this up to get paid. It takes a lot of preparation and putting it together makes it worth it every year to see the results.
Doors open at 2:30pm and the show starts at 4pm Harmon General admission tickets are still available or $25.
