Six female entrepreneurs met on the opening day of three days GSV – Emeritus India SummitTo discuss the urgent need to address the gender gap faced by women in the workforce in Gurugram.
The panel included Ashley Chimpo, Chief Education Officer, Emeritus; Smita Deorah, Co-Founder and CEO, Leader; Vani Kola, Managing Director, Kalari Capital; Prerna Jhunjhunwala, Founder and CEO, Innovation Galileo; Supriya Paul, CEO, Josh Toles and Lisa Tenorio, SVP, Learning Design, Harvard Business Publishing.
They were part of a panel discussion titled “The Power of Women Leading Innovation,” which explored the impact women leaders are making in their communities, how they are using education and entrepreneurship to bring about positive change.
Only 6% of venture-backed businesses in India are founded by women. However, if you look at the CEO rating, it’s only 2%. In our recent survey, 70% of women startups said they would mostly agree with male investors. 68% believe that fundraising is more difficult because of their gender. We need to start discussions on this issue and find solutions,” said Vani Kola, managing director of Kalari Capital.
The panel also looked at the challenges women face as they strive to lead.
According to Prerna Jhunjhunwala, founder and CEO of Creative Galileo, “Women make up 75% of all educators. When we consider principals, this figure drops to 50%. When we consider edtech founders, the figure drops to 6%. And less than 1% in the case of policy makers. As a founder, I feel strongly that this needs to change. We need to change the mindset of people to create an enabling environment for women entrepreneurs.
The world’s brightest and most influential leaders in education innovation, as well as Indian government decision makers, gathered on the first day of a three-day summit to discuss the future of India’s edtech sector and how to use learning to transform lives around the world.
