The ASM Grant Committee held its third meeting on Thursday at the Student Activities Center Discuss grants for art change, the Wisconsin Law Review, and the American Medical Association Interim Meeting.
According to GAC’s website, the group’s primary goal is to allocate funds in four different categories — operating grants, event grants, travel grants and grant transfers.
The committee first discussed a grant for Art for Change care package preparation. The organization is asking for $432.15 in funding to create care packages for patients at the University of Wisconsin and St. Mary’s Children’s Hospitals. The care packages include handbags and crafts for patients.
GAC revised the amount to $30 in line with their policy against using grant funds for grants. The committee tied 2-2 to approve the event; This resulted in defeat. GAC representative Syprian Oduor argued against the grant, saying the event had no educational value. Chairman Gracie Nelson has offered opportunities for the club to seek funding outside of the GAC.

Second, the committee discussed event funding for the Wisconsin Law Review Symposium, “Controlling the Supreme Court. This event offers 10.5 CLE credits to law students and attorneys and discusses the recent Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. The grant will support a two-day event with 22 experts from across the country and seven law professors. The event is open to all UW students.
The GAC approved this $3231.81 grant by a 4-0 vote. During the meeting, Rep. Kenny Hsu said the law review will have enough awareness to involve all students who want to participate.
GAC Chairman Nelson said anything above 2% of the budget ($4,000) would require further debate.

Finally, the committee voted on travel funds for the Interim Meeting of the Medical Student Section of the American Medical Association. This planned event includes four students traveling to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Interim Session and House of Representatives November 10-15.
The travel grant covers only transportation, which is $500 per student. Following the event, AMA MSS will host an information session to provide all medical students with a summary of the events. This was approved by the GAC 4-0.
The meeting concluded with comments from GAC Chair Gracie Nelson encouraging all organizations to apply for grants, as the committee used only 20 percent of its budget last year. These grants may cover travel expenses, arrangements, operations and transfers that fall within their policies and guidelines.
