A week-long tour by Governor Everest to promote travel in Wisconsin will make a stop in downtown La Crosse.
Evers first moved into the Pump House regional arts center, showcasing music, theater and visual art as attractions that could draw people to towns and cities. The Governor stated that artistic groups have been severely affected by the epidemic.
“We are very happy that things are back, and our tourism industry is exceeding our expectations,” Evers said. “In terms of economic development, from arts programs to revenue, we’ve done more than any of our local states.”
The pump house received a state grant of $288,000 for building improvements.
Evers said the state could encourage more tourism by pouring money into museums and performing arts groups.
“The arts are part of the tourism industry here in Wisconsin,” and Evers says the Pump House is one of the reasons visitors come downtown.
The former Water Department pump building on King Street has been used for concerts, plays and art exhibitions since the 1970s. The Artpier Festival in June will be based in and around the Pump House.
