The Alabama Campaign for Adolescent Sexual Health (ACASH) postponed Saturday’s “Children’s Consent” show, which was slated to include “a gender-bending fashion show where kids dress up to explore the realm of self-expression.”

ACASH planned to host the event at the Springville Road Regional Library. According to its Twitter profile, the organization has received emails and phone calls demanding that the event be canceled because it is “inappropriate for children and adults.”

ACASH released the following event description on Birmingham265.org:

Join the Alabama Campaign for Teen Sexual Health for Children’s Consent Stop on May 20th from 11am to 2pm at the Springville Road Public Library in Birmingham. This is a free and public event where children and their parents come and learn about relationships, body boundaries, identity and more. We will have a gender creative fashion show and photo booth, consent story time (reading books from the list below), pin the egg on the fallopian tube game, table drawing, freeze dancing and lots of resources for parents and youth. – High school and college age youth. Snacks and snacks will also be served. We are partnering with Take BHM, URGE, Birmingham Public Library, Yellowhammer Fund and Planned Parenthood Southeast for this event. We hope you will join us!

According to ACASH, the books range in age from 3-9 years. Details include:

  • “Will you hug Ladybug?” By Hilary Leung

  • “Are bodies cool?” By Tyler Federer

  • “Doug Don’t Hug Him (He Doesn’t)” by Carrie Finnison

  • “C is for Conformity” by Eleanor Morris

  • “We listen to our bodies” by Lydia Bowers

  • “Rissy No Kisses” by Cathy House

  • “Can I give you a squash?” by Emily Nielsen

ACASH warned that the callers would disrupt the event and were “personally attacking and threatening library staff”. He said the decision to postpone the event was “out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of all involved,” but he still plans to host the event at some point this summer.

ACASH supports “age-appropriate” sexuality education in K-12 schools, providing online resources for students.

However, not all of these resources seem age-appropriate. A series of animated videos for ages 10-14 includes “Condom Negotiating,” “Sex: Intimacy and Sensation,” “Penis Size Matters,” “How to Be an LGBTQIA+ Partner,” and “How Bones Grow.” , “Being female, male, transgender or fluid,” “Abortion with pills: what is it?,” “What are pronouns?” And “porn is not sex, Ed.”

The organization condemned policies that prevent teachers from telling parents their child identifies as a gender different from their birth gender at school, or that prevent minors from accepting gender reassignments.
