As part of our mission to develop a diverse workforce in the STEM community, Cadence is honored to partner with the National Alliance for Graduate Engineering Minorities (GEM). In its four decades of history, GEM has connected bright and talented young minds from underrepresented groups to top companies, research institutes and universities.
This summer, we are thrilled to have five amazing students join our Cadence team as GEM Fellows. Throughout your internship, you will have the opportunity to apply your field of study to the way it is shaping the world of technology, which includes innovations in 5G, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and Artificial Intelligence (AI). .
GEM Fellows will have the opportunity to grow their professional network by connecting with other practitioners and influential leaders at Cadence. Technology. GEM Fellows collaborate with innovators across the organization to use their new skills to advance their future career goals.
At Cadence, we are proud to showcase the impact of Fellows’ achievements, as well as share their graduate work. Each brings unique ideas and perspectives, strengthening our One Cadence—One Team culture. Meet our GEM colleagues and hear what they have to say about their experiences:
Kayla Thames, Georgia Institute of Technology
While studying to earn a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering, Kayla is driven to own a technology startup that helps small business owners thrive. She is also eager to return to academic life with the more effective multitasking skills she developed during her time at Cadence.
What has been your most enjoyable internship at Cadence?
The most enjoyable part of my job at Cadence is getting the chance to test and critique the software my team is currently developing.
How has being a member of GEM affected you?
Being a GEM Fellow has opened doors to many new experiences and opportunities. I appreciate the GEM Fellowship and all the work they do to provide opportunities for myself and other minorities like this internship with Cadence.
Why did you decide to intern at Cadence?
I decided to intern at Cadence because not only was I impressed with the work and effort the company put in, but I had a great experience with my recruiter and interviewer, so I decided to join Cadence as a no-brainer.
Sidney Williams, Johns Hopkins University
Returning to Cadence for his second year, Saidi plans to complete his electrical engineering master’s program in 2023. Saidi is excited to expand his understanding of chip design, development, manufacturing, and its impact on the industry globally. Welcome Sayyid!
How has being a member of GEM affected you?
Being a GEM Fellow has only influenced my dreams. Not only did I have the opportunity to attend graduate school for free, but I also had the opportunity to work with and connect with people at an amazing company and others who have helped me grow technically and professionally at GEM. These opportunities have helped push me to heights in life that I never thought possible until recently, and I am so grateful!
What do you hope to bring to academic life from Cadence?
I hope to take my newfound professional knowledge, technical knowledge, and more polished soft skills back from this internship to research for my master’s degree, which I begin next fall.
What are your plans after graduation?
I would like to find a useful computer engineering job related to GPU, SoC, motherboard or general ASIC design. I want to learn some more technical and financial skills so that I can work to become an entrepreneur.
Rosemary Nwosu-Ihueze, University of Kentucky
Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science with an expected graduation date of fall 2023, Rosemary hopes to work in the human-computer interaction industry to create exciting user experiences.

Why did you decide to intern at Cadence?
After an interview with my current mentor (supervisor), I decided to intern at Cadence. The first impression was amazing!
Carlos Ayala Bellido, Stanford University
Starting a new chapter at Stanford University this fall, Carlos plans to graduate in 2024 with a Master of Science in Computational and Mathematical Engineering. An experience that can be wholeheartedly applied to his upcoming academic tenure and beyond.
What has been your most enjoyable internship at Cadence?
The most enjoyable part of my job at Cadence is challenging myself by learning a new language and a new style of programming. The work I’ve done with SystemVerilog and scripting is nothing I’ve ever done before, and it took work to get it right. By the same token, it’s been fun because it means I’m trying new things and working on new skills, especially knowing that it all culminates in a project that can improve the quality of certain Cadence products.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to take some time off from school and work on my software engineering career, once I feel I have enough experience I may move into product management. I’d like to consider pursuing another master’s degree or PhD, but I’d like to at least have the opportunity to explore my options and my feelings about a career in industry before considering academia.
How has being a member of GEM affected you?
Being a GEM fellow really affected me because before that I had never considered graduate school as an option. When I applied to some graduate programs in the fall, I made more of a promise to myself to see what my options would be than what I actually got. Hearing that I would be a GEM Fellow suddenly made me realize that I could consider these schools because graduate studies were beyond my financial means and pushed me toward my decision to quit my full-time job.
Euler Valdivieso, Ohio State University
Aiming to graduate in 2027, Uller will enter his doctoral program in electrical engineering at Ohio State University this fall. After graduation, Uller is motivated to join a company like Cadence that develops technology that improves the quality of life and helps those who need it most.
How has being a member of GEM affected you?
The GEM scholarship program allowed me to gain valuable work experience and skills through my internship at Cadence. He has awarded me an academic term fellowship that will allow me to pay for my education. Accepting the GEM scholarship tells me that I am seen as someone who has the potential to contribute to the future of our society. It brought me one step closer to achieving my goals.
Why did you decide to intern at Cadence?
I decided to intern at Cadence because it is a leader in electronic system design, which is my passion. I am thrilled to be working for a company whose clients are some of the most innovative companies in the world, delivering amazing electronic products to markets as diverse as automotive and aerospace.
What has been your most enjoyable internship at Cadence?
My most enjoyable internship at Cadence is learning new things, such as implementing design with RTL-to-GDSII flow and functional security. It was also amazing to be able to work with people who have the same goal as me, which is to develop technologies that help society.
