For the first time in program history, the Hokies received a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament

The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team has been awarded the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, the selection committee announced Sunday night. It is the highest seed the program has received for the tournament.

The Hokies begin their streak against Chattanooga on Friday. USC and South Dakota State will participate in the opening weekend of Biscburg. Tech is Region 3 in Seattle.

Tech (27-4) won the ACC Tournament last week after defeating Miami, Duke and Louisville on consecutive days at Greensboro Coliseum to capture its first title since joining the conference in 2004.


For the program, it is 12^Th Appearing in the “Big Dance” and leading the third row Kenny Brooks. Tech’s overall record in the tournament is 9-11, and the Hokies last made it to the second weekend in 1999 (the program’s only appearance in the Sweet Sixteen).

Brooks, a semifinalist for the Naismith Women’s College Coach of the Year, is making his ninth start at the tournament and is 2-8.


One of the hottest teams in America, the Hokies have won straight contests since January 11, a stretch that includes five level opponents, four road games and three at a neutral site.

 

The Hokies are led by two-time ACC Player of the Year. Elizabeth KeightleyHe is now the program’s all-time leading scorer. She averaged 18.6 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game while shooting 56.3% from the field. The senior center earned All-Defensive honors and won the Athlete of the Year award for the second consecutive season.

He is a junior at point guard. Georgia Amoore, ACC Tournament MVP and first team All-ACC member. At Greensboro, she averaged 21.6 points per game and set an ACC tournament record with 14 3-pointers.

Tech’s third all-conference performer is a forward. Taylor Soule Named to the ACC second team. It was the fourth all-conference honor of her career. She averaged 11.3 points and 5.7 rebounds this season.

The Hokies set several program records this season, including winning 14 ACC games for the first time, earning a top-four seed in the ACC Tournament for the first time and defeating six ranked opponents. Tech went 14-1 at home and 8-1 in league games for the second straight season at Carilion Clinic Court.
