Our Spotlight series highlights the work and lives of tax professionals around the world. This week’s spotlight is on Bomer Consulting Inc., a shareholder and consultant in Kansas City, Mo.
Campbell helps accounting firms better their processes to become more profitable and improve client satisfaction. She also helps nurture and develop future strong leaders through the Boomer Leadership Academy, contributes to the Boomer Bulletin and other industry publications, and speaks at industry conferences. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants named her one of the 25 Most Powerful Women in Accounting.
When she’s not working, you can find Campbell reading an e-book, watching a movie with her three children, or dreaming about a vacation to the Maldives.
What is your official title and what does it mean? My title is shareholder and consultant. Stockholder is self-explanatory—I am Boomer Consulting Inc. I am the owner, along with five other shareholders. Our team provides communities, consulting and training focused on five areas critical to the success of a CPA firm: leadership, talent, growth, technology and process. As a consultant, I collaborate with large accounting firms to provide insights that help them improve their processes and grow their people.
Free Time: Book, Audiobook or Podcast? Definitely books. I love to read and prefer e-books to paper books, so the book I’m reading is always available on my phone. I don’t listen to podcasts very often, but when I do, I listen to Boomer Briefing, a weekly podcast that helps firm leaders solve critical business issues in 20 minutes or less.
Taxation is a big subject. What is your area of special interest? My special interest is helping companies implement process improvements that enable outsourcing and automation to support the organization of the future. I help companies solve talent challenges by focusing on building capabilities so they can deliver more value. I help organizations make these changes in their tax departments, but also in their audit, consulting, management and other areas.
What’s the last movie or show you saw and liked (on DVD, Netflix, or in the theater)? I have 12-year-old twin daughters and an 8-year-old son, and we are looking forward to the release of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” later this year. We watched the first movie—one of our favorites!
What college did you go to and what did you study? I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. (Go Badgers!) I received a Six Sigma Green Belt from The Ohio State University Lynn and a Six Sigma Black Belt from the University of Georgia. Six Sigma is a collection of tools and techniques that companies use to improve production, eliminate defects, and ensure quality.
Go for takeout: coffee or tea? I love coffee, although I drink decaf which some people don’t consider. However, I love my cup of decaf in the morning.
What is the best tax or financial advice anyone has ever given you? How important it is to start financial education at an early age. My husband and I are working with our three children and setting things up for them to be successful, including learning about investing, credit and taxes.
If you weren’t working in the tax profession, what would your dream job be? I used to be a travel blogger who got paid to visit sunny, beautiful places and review their resorts!
If you had the chance to make one change in the tax world—an additional credit, a deduction, whatever—what would it be? I make sure every company leader understands how important employee experience is to delivering a great customer experience. If you want to be the best at what you do, it starts with your employees.
Favorite food, snack or candy during tax season or other busy times? Chips and queso. The good news is that we don’t have a lot of time as we help organizations throughout the year, so I always have a reason to enjoy a chip and quiz!
What tax news or activity had the greatest impact on your practice or clients last year? The news surrounding the struggle for talent has impacted the conversations we are having with our clients. The skills shortage isn’t new, but there’s a growing focus on getting out of the epidemic. Our clients are focused on attracting, recruiting and retaining talent. That requires supporting remote and hybrid work, improving processes and technology, and upskilling and re-directing people.
What would you do if you received a large tax refund check? I was traveling. I would go to the Maldives and rent a nice bungalow on the beach—with no better internet access so I could unplug and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
