Under the Influence: Fashion Society is an organization dedicated to showcasing the artistic talents of UT Martin students in fashion. It was founded in August 2021 by its president, Shantia Crawford. Their High Council welcomes and encourages individuals who show interest or talent in modeling, hairdressing, designing, sewing or creating in any capacity. Under the Influence helps promote small businesses by bringing in creatives like nail technicians, makeup artists, photographers, artists and more at their big events. It is an ideal environment for like-minded people to network, exchange resources and grow their business. Everyone involved has a purpose and their position, no matter how big or small it may seem, plays a significant role.
Not only does the organization host events such as special fashion shows, they also emphasize the importance of community service. On Sundays, UTI:FS takes time to serve local youth at the Martin Enrichment Academy, also known as the Youth Center. When given the opportunity, they donate clothing to Weakley County. With a positive attitude and hard work, they continue to be recognized for their service in the city of Martin.
This semester the group plans to do more community service and host more events. This will include a Valentine’s Day basket fundraiser for Valentine’s Day until February 10, 2023. In addition, the organization looks forward to showcasing women through activities, fundraising and club collaborations during Women’s History Month in March. Another exciting thing to look forward to is Black Fashion Week. As a predominantly black organization, members of UTI:FS share and celebrate the long history of black fashion. A lot of their content is posted to their Instagram account and they grow their followers exponentially because influencing and empowering others is something the organization prides itself on. Members also share their skills and participate in creative workshops. After all, model calls for the spring fashion show are expected to take place on March 1, 2023.
