In the two weeks leading up to fall camp, I’ve been giving my thoughts on Georgia Tech’s prospect depth chart and explaining why I’m starting those players. Fall camp is officially underway and it’s time to give my final two depth chart predictions for Georgia Tech ahead of the 2022 season.
You can go through the links below to see the predictions and breakdowns for each individual position:
Quarterbacks
Running back
Wide receiver
narrow end
Offensive line
line of defense
Linebackers
Here are my two depth chart predictions for the 2022 season. It’s fair to expect plenty of activity with the upcoming season.
Quarterback:
Starter: Jeff Sims
Backup: Zach Gibson
Sims will be the starter again and I think he could be in for a great season. Gibson, a transfer from Akron, has a slight edge over Clemson transfer Tysun Fomachan.
running back
Starter: Donta Smith
Backup: Dylan McDuffie
Donta Smith is looking to lead the rush and be the leader of this team in 2022, but I think Buffalo transfer Dylan McDuffie will take the backup job because of his familiarity with running backs coach Mike Daniels. Louisville transfer Hassan Hall will also be important this season.
Wide receiver:
Since X Receiver: Leo Blackburn
Backup: James BlackStrain
Starting Z receiver: Malachi Carter
Backup: Kalani Norris
Starting slot receiver: Nate McCollum
Backup: Malik Rutherford
This young man is a talented but unproven position. I think Blackburn is a potential star and Carter gives the team a veteran presence. I’m excited to see if James Blackstein plays a role in this offense. New receivers coach Dale Alexander has some interesting pieces to work with.
Tight end:
Starter: Dylan Leonard
Backup: EJ Jenkins
This team has been bringing in new faces and will be used more under offensive coordinator Chip Long. I think Jenkins is a good receiver option in certain formations as a wide receiver and converted wide receiver Paige Harris.
Offensive Line:
Starting Left Addition: Quick Pierce
Backup: Jackie Leftwich
Starting Left Guard: RJ Adams
Backup: William Leigh
Center: Weston Franklin
Backup: Will Sissom.
Starting right guard: Paul Ticchio
Backup: Paula Vaipulu
Starting right tackle: Jordan Williams
Backup: Jackie Leftwich
The most important part of the attack is the offensive line. The Yellow Jackets brought in four transfers and I think three of them will be immediate impact players. Jordan Williams is an up front veteran and leader and can play any tackle position. There might be some moving around with these guys, but that’s how I do the project.
Defense line:
Defensive ends: Keon White and Kyle Kennard
Backups: Kevin Harris and Noah Collins
Starting defensive tackles: TK Chimeza and Zeke Biggers
Backups: Marcus Scott and Daniel Carson
This is a position I expressed concern about going into this season and I still feel that way. There aren’t enough proven playmakers in either position and it would take a huge leap forward for many players to make this a better unit.
Linebackers:
Starters: Charlie Thomas and Andy Eley
Backups: Trenilyas Tatum and Demetrius Knight II
The most experienced position on defense in 2022 is linebacker. Charlie Thomas and Indy Ealy will lead the defense and backups Trenilyas Tatum and Demetrius Knight II also have experience.
Secondary:
Starting corners: Zamari Walton and Myles Sims
Backups: Kenyatta Watson and Kenny Bennett
Starting Nickel: LaMiles Brooks
Starting safeties: Derrick Allen and Jaylon King
Backups: Caleb Edwards and Jalen Huff
Improvement in the secondary is critical to this team’s success and there are guys who can improve this unit. Georgia Tech brought in five transfers to give them some depth, something that is lacking at this position and those guys could be pushed to start work. There will be a lot of competition for these positions and expect some turnover as the year goes on.
