Fashion designer Giorgio Armani and dozens of other firefighters were forced to flee their holiday villas overnight as they battled the remains of two wildfires on the Sicilian island of Pantelleria on Thursday.

The photo shows flames that appear to have engulfed Arman’s villa, but the press office says they have stopped the property close. Armani and the guests went to a boat in the harbor.

Salvatore Cocina, head of the region’s civil protection agency, said two wildfires, suspected of arson, had forced about 30 people to take shelter in boats or in areas of the island. Firefighters used Canadair aircraft to work with teams on the ground to protect homes. Officials said no structures appeared to be lost.

The island’s mayor, Vincenzo Campo, told the ANSA news agency that two Canadians were working to put out the last of the fire on difficult terrain and that the wind had dropped.

“After last night’s big scare and his night on the job, Pantelleria is getting back to normal,” Campo said. “Looks like the worst is over.”

Local authorities are appealing for any information that could help determine the cause of the fire, which broke out at two points about a quarter-mile apart.

Located between Sicily and Tunisia, Pantelleria is a popular beach and hiking destination with ancient archaeological sites and natural landforms.
