A Bay Area family trying to leave SFO for a trip to Jamaica says they lost $10,000 in vacation time due to air travel chaos.
It was a complex of isolated places that all fell apart the moment their itinerary was canceled Tuesday morning on their Southwest Airlines flight from SFO to Miami.
From there, they were set to fly to Jamaica on American Airlines. But when the Khuranas called America to reschedule their international flight, they were told they would have to start over and rebook everything.
In total, the Khuranas said they lost nearly $10,000 in plane tickets, Airbnb reservations and prepaid long-term parking at SFO.
“[American Airlines] He just told us. [the Southwest cancellation] It wasn’t their problem,” Mr Khurana said as his family packed their bags to drive home. “If we want any payment, it should be with Southwest.”
Southwest Airlines has announced that it will cut one-third of its scheduled flights over the next several days as winter weather continues to wreak havoc on American holiday travel.
The extent of the cancellation prompted the US Department of Transportation to speak out. Southwest is looking at whether it can do more. To prevent them.
The Khuranas, who declined to give their first names, received little sympathy from the Airbnb hosts, who said the family refused to return the money they had all been held.
“I understand why property owners have to be strict, but this is the definition of a freak-of-nature,” Mr Khurana said. “Going forward, I don’t think we’re going to have any cap rates or charge any more.” Once you pull out a pin, everything falls apart.
With two sons in college, the Khuranas looked forward to the opportunity to reunite their family. But without taking off from SFO, they headed back to Danville to look for other flights.
“At least we got some family time this morning,” Mrs. Khurana said with a tired laugh.
