Fall travel trends highlight how and where Americans spend

Labor Day weekend is just a few weeks away to kick off the US fall travel season. Despite a crazy summer for travel, with much of the world reopening after more than two years of Covid-related lockdowns, Americans’ need for vacations remains unsatisfied.

According to TripAdvisor’s 2022 Fall Travel Index—based on the platform’s first-party search data, combined with relevant user sentiment data—61 percent of U.S. respondents plan to travel this fall, if only slightly differently than they thought.

The desire to travel will never go back.

According to the index, despite challenging inflation, 37 percent of Americans still plan to travel this fall as originally planned. Globally, 34 percent indicated they plan to travel as planned between September and November, despite continued cost increases.

Despite record inflation, crazy gas prices and the ongoing effects of COVID-19, global consumer demand for travel (especially among Americans) shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Adequate demand is prompting Americans to cut back on other expenses to make sure they take their fall vacation. In fact, half of Americans (50 percent) plan to travel more this fall, and two-thirds (66 percent) plan to spend more this fall than the same period last year.

Travel can look a little different.

While summer vacations are still in the books, the cost-of-living crisis is affecting Americans’ choices. Nearly half (45 percent) of U.S. travelers say ‘price’ influences their choice of travel date, and two-thirds (66 percent) consider ‘price/affordability’ a top criterion in their travel planning process.

So, even though high costs have kept Americans from traveling this fall, many have had to adjust their plans a bit. Thirty-five percent of respondents said they would take a short trip, with nearly a quarter (24 percent) choosing a destination closer to home than originally planned.

Domestic and international travel

As seen globally, domestic travel will remain the preferred form of travel for Americans for the foreseeable future, whether due to the high cost of travel or other factors. According to TripAdvisor, 81 percent of U.S. and 60 percent of international travelers are opting for a domestic vacation this fall.

However, there is also an encouraging trend of increasing long-haul air travel. More than 40 percent of Americans surveyed plan to travel more than seven hours, and nearly half (49 percent) will travel by air.

In the year Compared to the Fall Travel Index survey in 2021, where 68 percent of U.S. travelers stuck with staycation-like getaways accessible by car or train, this year’s survey clearly shows that Americans are ready to take big trips.

Additionally, more than half of Americans (56 percent) are planning fall trips of at least four nights, and one-third (33 percent) are planning vacations of five nights or more. TripAdvisor also noted that the Labor Day holiday weekend is set to be the most popular travel time of the season.
